Congressman \V,C. Hawley was taken
down to the Bay by Captain Groat in
the government launch on Sundav iaet,
and shown the need of a 10ft. channel nt
low tide to Tillamook Citv.
Mayor H.
T. Botts and a number of citizens accom
panied him on 1 he trip, going as far as
Bai’ City.
Mr. Hawley would have
understood the situation much better
had he been taken down when the tide
was out. but as it was full tide Sunday
afternoon, he tailed to see what the bay
and slough looks like at low tide.
Sheriff Crensha w arrested Frank Long,
jr., on Friday for violating the local
option law. Long had been selling liquor
to the half breeds, and the sheriff having
obtained sufficient evidence, arrested him
and gave him a night’s lodging in the
county jail. Next morning Long decided
to pl-ad guilty, and Justice White fined
him $75. which was paid The sheriff
also made Earl Blvback squeal on him
self when he found he was under the
sheriff‘s care for selling liquor, and the
justice made him dig up$75 for violating
the same law.
No doubt these two
young men will be confronted with
a government official before long for
violating the U.S. law.
County Judge C. J. Trenchard and
Commissioner Willian Larson, of Clat
sop County, came in last week over the
trail from Seaside tor the purpose of see
ing what work is necessary to open up
the roads between Tillamook and Clat
sop Counties. While in the city they con
ferred with County Judge Goodspeed
and Commissioner Alley, of this countv,
and as a result of the conference, the
officials came to the conclusion that it
was the proper thing for both counties
to connect both roads. To finish the in
ner road it will not take much more
work, but it is upon the Necarney road
where this county would have to do con
siderable work, but it is vica versa with
Clatsop county.
Sudden Death at the Fair.
Quite a little excitement was caused
at the noon hour on Friday, when the
streets were thronged with people at
tending the fair. A. S. Ayer was talk,
ing to his youngest son. Earl, on the
sidewalk, when he suddenly few dead
near Alex. McNair’s store.
Dr. Upton
was called, but could do nothing for the
unfortunate man. for life was extinct.
Coroner Reynolds had the body removed
to his undertaker’s establishment, but
did not think it advisable to hold an in
quest, heart failure being the cause of
death. The deceased was 59 years of
age, being born in Vermont on the 6th
April, 1848. He married Miss Mary Jane
Smith, who died 22 years ago, leaving
two sons. Forrest and Earl. He went to
California some 20 years ago, and since
then has been in most of the Western
states, coming to Tillamook in 1900 with
his sons and located at Blaine. He was
a Mason 30 years, and the members of
the lodge in this city took charge of the
lur.eral arrangements, the burial being
in the Oddfellows’cemetery on Sunday,
the religious service being conducted by
Rev. D. L Shrode, pastor of the M E.
church. Mr. Ayer was a man who was
well respected, and hi» sudden death
came as a great shock to his sons, who
have the sympathy of the community in
their bereavement.

Truth is, dairying in no harder
work than anything else. The man who
wants to live without work should go
into politics.
There are a great many honest dairy
men. but selling a cow is a hard test to
put them to. Better suggest before they
have committed themselves that a Bab
cock tester doesnt’t know how to lie.
Good authorises have been preach

dairying began and yet it is estimated
that fourteen tons of cow manure is sold
in bottles in New York every year. This
