Carry the only exclusive line of Men’s Wearing Apparel in Tillamook County. ♦ Crouse & Brandegee Clothing, Walkover Shoes, Gordon Hats. Utz & Dunn Shoes. Philadelphia is torweuted with a plague of H.-as, They have come, true 10 the wtilling of the department of agriculture, which has found that differ ent sections of the state are being almost aimultaneooely set upon by the peats \\ bile the over-populated slum districts suffer particularly, they do not suffer alone. The flea loves blue blood, and he has descended upon the swell residential sections in full force. Beside this new plague that of mos quitoes, still unchecked, as is nothing. A flea bite demands instant attention, no matter what the unfortunate may be en gaged upon when the nip comes. They bite day or night, in beds, in care or upon the street The flea is a little brown insect, no big ger than a piu point, and when an effort is made to crush him he simply flattens out and seems to enjoy it. After a while, when this becomes tiresome, he, perhaps jumps off, apparently vanishing in space, only to turn up near the same spot a lit tle later. Fully half those who are now suffering from the pests attribute the bites to mosquitoes or call them hives. Naturalists lay the plague to the loi g- continued warm, moist weather, which, they claim, has bred the insects by mil lions. They have infested hotels and pri vate residences alike, and nothing short of a chemical bath shows any success in their exteiminatlou Flea bites affect dif. ferent people differently. Some victims of the plague have been forced to go to hospitals for relief, the irritating poison causing large puffed swellings. Upon others only tiny red marks and little or no irritation result. Because of the flea’s sturdy physique the problem of his ex termination is a serious one. He scoffs at the incense of Chinese punk and plies his trade upon the plump arm which waves it. Naturalists, however, admire the flea, and can not be induced to say much against him. “ A plague or fleas?" said one. -‘ Sup pose there is. They won t hull you.” He then asked if it was generally known that a man equipped with the kickers of a flea might stand at the corner of Thir teenth and Market streets and leap, without effort to the brim of William penn’e hat, on the city hall tower.— Philadelphia Record ; g I Four Leaders that can’t be excelled. A 4 pound parcel costs 64 cents pastage, but can be sent to London from this country for 49 cents postage Great system, truly. Voters should men tion the subject to their candidates for congress, who may never have heard of the lobby that prevents parcels post im provement. The reason why so many girls with money prefer to marry Englishmen, says an eastern writer, is because the money means so much more in the lite of a pub lie man abroad. “Had Lady Curzon wed a husband who won high place here, her wealth would not have served him or gained political promotion ns it did in England, lie would still have been, whatever his place, holding only for a term of years, subject to the recurrent choice of a body of democratic equals. Only on these terms could he share in the exciting task ol government For a decade she drunk of the best of life's cup No marriage in this country could have given her a life as vivid, as s|>ectacular, as brilliant or as conspicuous." Under command of government troops the earthquake and fire-devastated city of Valparaiso, Chili, began the tremen dous task of canr.g for the thousands of homeless and destitute residents, bury ing the dead and restoring order. Loot ing was checked by rigorous measures, more than 150 robbers being summarily shot. The government promptly appro priated 4.000,000 pesos with which to begin relief and reconstruction work. The number of dead is not yet officially reported, but is likely to exceed 8000. Estimates of the property loss vary from JIOO.OOO.OOO to »150,000,000. For a week after the first great shock thete were numerous seismic disturbances, as was the case after the San Francisco earthquake. The worst damage was done in the thickly populated section of the city, which rests on made ground. Offers of relief contributions have l>een received from all parts of the world. Already 30.0*» refugees have arrived at Santiago. The streets are still in dark ness and nearly impassable, owing to the debris of falling buildings. Several smaller towns in that aeation ’ufTered heavily Suffering of the homeless tlmu aii<iu was intensified by the wio>ry rains which prevailed. _______ F_.
