Newell Tries to Shoot Rapids at Eugene. Dudley R. Newell, son of P, D. Newell, who previously resided at Nehalem, a junior at the University of Oregon, was drowned in the Willamette River Tues day evening after “shooting” the rapids near the head of the millrace. With Charles Neal, as a companion, Newell went up the race in a canoe and paddl- ed some distance above the rapids. At this time of the year the rapids are so rough that a boat requires skillful hand ling to pass them safely, but both stu. dents agreed to risk a ducking and let their boat drift with the current. According to Neal, the survivor, they bad safely reached the bottom of the rapids when the canoe struck a rock and capsized, throwing both into the water. After a short struggle each re gained the upturned canoe and floated down stream safely enough until, as they attempted to right the half-submerged boat, it slipped away under the water. Newell then started to swim for shore, while Neal, afraid to attempt the dis tance, waited for the canoe to reappear, and, as he caught it, glanced across the water to see his mate sink for the last time. Panic-stricken, he left the boat, swam ashore and ran nearly two mdes to secure help. The news spread like wildfire, and al most immediately 200 students were on the scene and five boats supplied with grabbling hooks and divers were search- ing for the body, but the water is very swift and murkv, so that there is little hope of recovering the body. Newell was one of the most popular students attending college, and held a very responsible office as business man ager of the Oregon Weekly. He was a resident of Eugene, but was originally registered from Nehalem, Tillamook County. ____________ MAY 24, 1906 >1.50 per year Pater is Captured. S an F rancisco , May 21.—Assistant United States Attorney Black stated this morning that S. A. D. Puter, who was apprehended ill Alameda yesterday for alleged complicity in the Oregon land frauds, will be taken to Oregon immed iately, where proceedings in the .federal court will be begun against him. Puter was captured within two blocks of the city prison, and a women proved his undoing. When arrested Puter wns about to keep his appointment with Mrs, Fred Ware, sister-in-law of Mrs. Horace I McKinley of this city. Puter was not resigned to his fate when the officers clapped him on the shoulder and asked him to surrender. In a moment he had drawn his heavy Colts revolver from his belt and was menacing his captors. Remembering the desperate methods he employed several moirths ago to es cape from Secret Service Agent W. J. Burns, Puter again attempted to fight for liberty. One of the officers, however, threatened him with a club and others covered him with their guns. Even then Puter fought every step of the distance to the police station and tried at every turn to break trom the hold of the officers. The five men who succeeded in taking Puter prisoner were R. H. Perry, D. F. Cecil and Robert Spaulding, in the employ of William J. Burns, and Chief of Police Con.-ad and Policeman Wohmuth, who were asked by the government detectives to aid in the capture. It was learned Sunday from Mrs. McKinley that her sister had an ap. pointment to meet Puter at 2 p.m., but Puter missed the car on which she came and started to walk to the corner where he expected the car to stop. It was while he walked this short dis tance that the secret service men gave a sign to two officers who immediately stepped forward and took the man into custody. Burns' men by shadowing Mrs. E. L. Watson, residing at 1379 Fifth avenue. East Oakland, discovered where Puter lived and all about his movements. He came here from New York three days ago and immediately took a room in a lodging house in this citv, Satur day night he visited his wife at 1517 Spruce street, Berkeley. He remained with her several hours and then returned to his lodgings in this city. When captured and securely locked in a cell, Puter Bavagely informed the de tectives that he had already engaged passage on a steamer to China and hoped to leave for that country in a few days.
