In politics people ought to look aroand and see in what kind of company they find themselves. For instance, Candidate Walter Tooze, of Woodburn, is not sup ported by a single one of the old school land ring. If you want a congressman who is free from their domination, then support Tooze at the primary for con gress. For instance, not a single one of the cl I Salem political ring is supporting Tooze for congress. If you want a congressman who is not e tsy game for that gang, who run this county in debt and disgrace, support Tooze for congress. Show us a Marion county machine pol itician who has ’been indicted for land frauds, and we will show you a man fighting Tooze. They want a man who is easy and no obstacle to ring rule, and who will make ring appointments, and do machine dic tation. The people who want a new deal and a clean deal should nominate the man tie gumshoe brigade don’t want, and they will get good results. This is plain talk. but. so far as lies in the power oi this little one horse paper, the truth about candidates will be told. —Salem Journal. Milking by Machinery. Several months ago the new Burrell- Lawrence-Kennedy Cow Milking ma chines were installed in the Wauna Farm da y of W. C. Spence at Portland, Ort. Tli- se machines ateindailv use and have proved a complete success in every way. The cows take to the machines kindly, give their milk down readily and con tinue with their feeding during milking. The machines milk the cows quickly and dry and after they had been used a w hile the How of milk seemed to increase over hand milking. In Mr. Spence’s dairy of 40 cows all the milking is now done by one man with two machines where formerly two men were employed for band milking. T he principal value of the milking ma chines is their sanatary feature as the milk drawn through them is far cleaner than that drawn by hand being practic ally pure and ’.ill keepsweet from twice to three times as long.—Homestead. For National Quarantine. April 17th Special)—As the press voices the sentiment of the people and the Republican press of the state Burning practically unanimous in their support of Hon. John H. Aitkin, of Huntington, for State Treasurer, it would seem. •• to a man up a tiee” that ho is in the lead for the position. It is conceded that Eastern Oregon will give their favorite a splendid vote, his' friends and admirers in western Oregon sre working hard and long for him, they admire his clean cut cam paign. which is free from personalities and “mud-slinging,” the people approve his straight forward sound platform and will show their approval of it by their votes. In this city he lias made a remarka ble campaign. his supporter, feel confi dent of success, as there is quite a senti ment to give the State Treasurer to Eastern Oregon, and Mr. Aitkin looks like the winner. DR. JAMES WITHYCOMBE, Republican Candidate for Governor. A drift of the Cleveland Democracy toward William J. ,Bryan is showing itself in different parts of the country. As compared with William R. Hearst. Mr. Bryan is believed to be a conserva tive. He is also believed to be the only man who would have a chance of defeating Mr. Hearst in the national convention of two years hence. A prom inent New York Cleveland Democrat is reported as predicting that if the Demo, crude organization can be kept out oi Hearst’s hands until 1908. New York state will send a Bryan delegation to the national convention. This would be a surprising change in popular sentiment in the Demociatic parry, but there are reasons for assum ing that it is impending. Hearst is becoming almost as much of a terror to old-fasbioned Clevelandites as Robe spierre was to the French conservatives of a little over a century ago. He is a radical beyond any of the supporters of Bryan in the great radical outbreak of 1896. The ideas i brown into Bryan’s platform of ten years ago, which sent hundreds of thousands of Democrats out of their party for the time, become commonplaces in political discussion. Free silver has been abolished by Re publican victories and by Republican statutes, but the rest of the wild fea tures of the 1896 platform are still avail able for exploitation, and some of them seem less dangerous than they looked to be then. It is said that Belmont, Ryan, De- Lancey Nicol), Gorman and otheis of the old-time conservatives are to get up a reception for Bryan when he lands in New York at the end oi his tour around the world. Such an affair, which would have been inconceivable a lew years ago, is part of the natural course of events now. Nobody seems to be surprised at the report of the rumored approaching rally of the conservatives on Bryan. The appearance of Cleveland as one of the speakers at the Bryan reception is not at all improbable. Confronted with this portent of Hearst all the moderates and the quasi radicals are forced into the same camp. Not that Cleveland and his faction bate Brvan less, hut Hearst more. Democratic politics has made some lightning changes in the past halt a century, but a transformation is pro bably just ahead of us which will make all the metamorphoses from Douglas’ and Breckinridge’s dais onward look tame —Globe Democrat. in office.
