Says Boilers Were Poor.
M ask I sland , Oct. 20.—Commander

martial on charges growing out of the
recent explosion of the gunboat Ben­
nington, at San Diego, Cal., took the
' witness stand today.
He said that when he assumed com.

predecessor, made a complete inspection,
including a thorough inspection of the
engineer department. His attention was
called to the tumbling down of a crown-
sheet patch on a boiler. In a few days
he made a report, but not until satisfy,
ing himself of the actual condition exist,

erew and witnessing drills, ,he found the
ship in good condition regarding clean
lines, and, upon inspection of the engines
and appurtenances, found them good,
but the boilers were in poor condition,
but, if no undue strain were placed on
them, thay might last an indefinite
period.
Commander Yonng’s examination
was not concluded Friday.
Commander W. H. Allerdice adhered
to his theory that the collapse of Boiler
B. was due to oyerheating. He stated
the life of a marine boiler is about nine
years. Newer ships than the Bennington
already have had new boilers installed ;
for instance, the Helena and Wilming­
ton.
Edward Kavanaugh, formerly boiler
maker at Mare Island, was the next wit­
ness. He had examined the rivets of
the collapsed furnace of Boiler B and
their condition was very bad. His
opinion was that they were driven over
sharp edges and through punched holes
Many were found to be brittle under a
test. Many in boilers A and B were in
the same condition. He examined boiler
B for overheating, and said there was
no appearance of the fire scale that ap
pears when the material is heated to a
cherry red.

Cunliffe Burned Money.
B ridgeport , Conn., Oct. 21.—The
Bridgeport police believe tonight that
they have accounted satisfactorily for
all of the $101,000 taken by Edward
G. Cunliffe, from the Adams Express
Company in Pittsburg and brought by
him to this city. In the opinion of De­
tective Captain Arnold, based on his
arrest when lie declared that he burned
• part of the money stolen, fearing that
its possession would lead to discovery
Mrs. Henry Clark, a chambermaid nt
the Arlington Hotel, where Cunliffe had
a room while here, told Captain Arnold
tonight, that on October 11, the dav
after Cunliffe went to the hotel she found
some black stains like those of wet
charred paper on the carpet in his
room and also found similar stains on
the bathroom floor, wh’le the bowl in
the bathroom was elogged with burned
paper.
At the time she had no suspicion that
the charred paper had once been money,
but Captain Arnold believes her story
currobates the statement made to him
bv Cunliffe.
Cunliffe said that one package of
$10,000 or more consisted of $100 bills
issued by a bank in Pittsburg ; that he
realised that any attempt to spend any
of this series of bills would probably
get him into trouble (and that there­
fore he burned the entire (package over
a lerosene lamp in his room and then
threw the charred remains into the bowl
in the bathroom.

dent of Police Birmingham consider to­
night that the case is now cleared up
with the statement of. the chamber­
maid.

with regard to color of egg shells, but
San Francisco prefers white ones. In
some markets where the brown egg is
favored, as in those of England, it is
said to lie not uncommon to color shells
of white eggs with coffee decoction or

ferent sections of this country that it is
necessary for manufacturers and shippers
to prepare their shipments especially for
the section of the country in which they
are to be consumed ; for instance, Wash­
ington demands a darker butter than
Chicago, and New Orleans demands a
color still darker than Washington.
Canada finds that male teachers are
disappearing, and reasonably concludes
that a salary of $300 or $400 a year
is not regarded as a prize in these
times. The Dominion ought not to be
surprised by the migration of its citi­
zens to the United States.

It has been officially asertained that
Port Arthur, when it surrendered, had
a garrison of 17 generals, 1300 other
commissioned officers and 25,000 able-
bodied men, and food and ammunition
enough to last sixty days. Gen. Stoes-
sei’s last ditch was far from being a
desperate extremity.

Mare Island Navy-Yard for more than
a year, will depart from Vallejo, Cal.,

the ordnance department at Mare Is.

Roseburg, Or., by Judge Harris to be
hanged at the penitentiary on December
15th, tor the murder of William Gra­
ham. Barnes reasserts his innocence,
alleging that Graham is still alive. He
was very cool in the court-room and
