S an F rancisco , Dec. 13.—E. H. Herri
man has arranged to spend next year
$2.800,000 for steel rails tor his two I
principal Western roads. On recommend-1
ations submitted to him by President H.
G. Burt, of the Union Pacific, and General
Manager Julius Cruttschnitt, of the
Southern Pacific, he has ordered for de
livery in 1901 80 and 90 pound steel
rails to the extent of 100,000 tons.
A contract to that effect has been clos
ed with the United States Steel Corpor
ation, the price per ton being $28. About i
two-thirds of the railswill be used on the
lines of the Southern Pacific in this state,
Oregon and Texas.
Nearly all oi the 100 pound steel rails
for the line over the Shasta and Siskiyou
Mountains between Redding, this state,
and Albany, Oregon, have been received :
and laid.

are disappointed, only to find the hollow
dissatisfaction, something to mar our jo v,

time the kingdom of God is preached,
