To give some idea that the Tillamook City public school is an up-to-date institution in an up-to date town, the two societies belonging to the High School have ordered 23 of the leading monthly magazines, for supplementary reading; also, highgrade piano, which it is obtaining at factory price, paying $4-00 for it, ar,d which will be here shortly. One hundred and fifty volumes have been ordered, to be added to the school library ; physical and chemical laboratory to be used by P»of. Whitney in the high school studies ; also the necessary appliances for a gymnasium. It will be seen that Tillamook City public school started this year under exceedingly favorable conditions, with an able and experienced principal, a fine corps of teacher, a new and commodious building and with all the necessary appurtenances which go to make up a first class school. The H eadlight feels convinced that the pupils appreciate what the patrons of this district have done for them, for they are enjoying opportunities and luxuries which children of parents of pioneers of Tillamook County never dreamed of. We expect to sec another successful school year, with no friction and everything working in harmony. Pupils Enrolled. At a Bargain, the J»sp„ Park. School Apportionment. Whitney heads fine Corps of Teachers» give p— F*ux Rot, BEAVER. Above is a picture of the new school building recently completed in Tillamook City, which cost over $8,000. It was designed Ly Charles A. Ihirggraf, of Albany, and erected by S. A. Brodhead, a local contractor, who has built all the large buildings in recent years in this city. It is a modern, up-to-date building, and contains eight rooms 25x32 feet, and anterooms 8x28 feet, being a two-story building with basement of eight feet. Each room is designed alike, well lighted, heated with steam from a boiler in the basement and ventilators from each room between the smoke« s.ack and brick chimney. The Board of Directors, who had charge of looking after the work and letting the contract, was composed of: H. H. Aiderman, P. W. Todd and B. L. Eddy, and Thomas Coates, clerk. All of the eight rooms are being used this year. The new building was built on the school grounds east of the old school building, which will be kept entact at present. 'There is some talk of turning the upper story of the old building into an assembly hall, holding the two lower rooms in reserve in case one or more of the outside districts consolidated or the attendance justified more teachers being engaged. Besides the usual course of studies, the High School course is included, which is made quite a feature. This was a long felt want in Tillamook for several years, until four years ago, when the patrons of Tillamook City district decided to add that branch to the city school. Quite a number of pupils from other districts have attended the high school in this city, and as they can obtain the necessary number of credits from the high school which wdl entitle them to enter the State University at Eugene, this does away with sending young people outside the county to take high school studies. The Board of Directors took great pains to secure a strong corps of teachers. The principal is Professor E. H. Whitney, and this is his second year as principal of Tillamook City school. Professor Whitney came from Nebraska, where he graduated from the McPherson Normal College at Republican Citv. and the Ash Grove College, Missouri. He was vice president of Oaklawn Normal College in Northeast Missouri for four years ami principal of High schools in Nebraska lor five years. He is a progressive principal, well qualified and persevering, and the school under his management last year was one of the most successful in the history of the public school of Tillamook City. The other teachers are graduates of the state and other universities, and include : Miss Alma Wagner, of Villiska, la. ; Miss Florence A. Hudson, of Tangent, Or. ; Miss Adel Dickel ; Miss Minnie Rolland, of Republican’City, Neb. ; Miss Anne Wallace, of Illinois ; Mrs. Beatrice Harrison and Mrs. Ella R.
