TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT. SEPTEMBER 3, General News. No More Suckers in Astoria. Weiser, Idaho, is freed of gamblers. The Chief ot Police and police foice rounded up all the tinhorn gamblers in the city, marched them to the depot and told them to hit the grit. Every slot- machine in the city has been taken out, and gambling ot every description pro hibited. The city was filling up with an undesirable class, and it became neces sary to get rid of them. * W * Ed Ford, superintendent of the Gold Coin Mining Company, operating in the Black Lake district, Idaho, arrived on Saturday with $5000, a clean-up of a ten days’ run with the cyanide plant. This is the third clean-up made within the past two months, aggregating nearly $14,000. The Gold Coin Mining Com pany has a splendid property. It is owned by La Cross, Wis., capitalists. * * * ZZ The Turkish Embassy in London, in a statement issued to the press, declares the reports of the murder of Vice-Consul Magelessen at Beirut to be absolutely false. The Sofia correspondent of the Times telegraphs that it is suggested th at the Beirut affair was merely a wedding party indulging in a feu de joie and the shots were not directed with design «gainst the United States Vice-Consul, Mr. Magelessen # * * Mrs. Jane M. Smith, of Forest Grove, Or., has given a quit claim deed to the property on the northeast corner of Main and North First a venuelto Druggist C. F. Miller, the instrument being placed in escrow with Attorneys Hollis & Hawks, to be turned over when, within six months, Mr. Miller vacates the pro ]>erty of Mrs. Smith's niece, Mrs. J. C. Clark, where his drugstore now is. For the first time in 54 years a business lot there may be used for the sale of liquor as a beverage without danger of litigation and possible loss of the property. * * M The Agricultural Department in a con tribution to the general discussion on the quality of milk supplied to cities has issued a bulletin on the subject in which many suggestions are made for the im provement of ihe milk supply, among which is the registration of all dairies, an official indorsement of properly con ducted dairies, and inspection of all herds, barns, dairy buildings, etc., once a month. The report savs : “ The practice of Pasturization appears to be gradually extending yet the medical fraternity is divided in opinion as to its expediency and the best sentiment favors natural milk produced and delivered in such a pure and protected condition as to be greatly superior to any Pasteurized a • tide. ’ * _________________ A proposal from J. F. Lever of Eureka, California, to the Chamber of Commerce was received at the meeting Monday night. Mr. Lever proposes to put up a woolen mill at Astoria, provided the Astoria people subscribe $15,000 in stock and $5000 for lumber, He doesn’t want much. Astoria is willing to donate a site for anv manufacture, but it is not going to furnish a site, put up a building, furnish the machinery, end put up $15,000 for a $5000 plant. Astorians have had some experience of a similar nature with a sash and door factory and today the suckers are all dead. As torians have taken stock in oil wells and gold minesand bought gold bricks, but the speel is off. They will aid any legiti mate enterprise, but are not going to furnish the money to buy a plant and make some California grafter a present of it. Mr. Lever will have to hunt (a new location.—Astorian Herald. A Bov’s Wild Ride for Life. They have come into the villages from the adjoining country bv the thousands and in many instances have put entire families to flight from their homes. The inhabitants are afraid to go to sleep for fear of an attack from the army of rodents and night and day witnesses a wholesale slaughter of the pests with firearms, clubs and poison. The local fire departments endeavored to drown out the invaders, but this method did not seem to diminish their number perceptibly. Hogs for Sale. A day or two after Sir Thomas Lipton arrived in New York he received a letter from an Irishman living on Staten island wishing him luck. The writer says that when Shamrock I came to this country in 1899 his wife presented him with a son, and two years later, the day after Shamrock II. arrived, she gave birth to a daughter. Just about the time Shamrock HI. first anchored in American waters another boy arrived.
