TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT. AUGUST 20. 1,1 *......... IJI” ■■'■'UI-- » V Same Old Rnle or Ruin Faction. reference to the bridge necessary to l>e It is plain to most everybody that the mission of the Independent is to "roast” Mr. B. L. Eddy and the editor of the Headlight, as most every issue of that paper contains some silly criticism. As tar as we are concerned we do not care one iota. It is somewhat different re garding Mr. Eddy, for it assails a gentle man whom the citizens have the highest respect for and confidence in—as an ex emplary citizen, a professional gentleman ail 1 a faithful public servant. He has obtained a reputation for integrity, honesty and industry in Tillamook that commends him to every fair thinking and unprejudiced person in the county, and having ably represented Tillamook and Yamhill counties in the state legislatuie on two occasions, with credit to himself and honor to his constitutents and the state, it is surprising that the Independ ent should have the audacity to throw <>ut all kinds of mean and silly insinua tions about him. Mr. Eddy’s character is above reproach and his reputation in the county is well established. Com pare Mr. Eddy's standing in the com munity, his professional ability and his Ingh personal character to that of K. M. Watson’s reputatiou in Kansas, Elma and Tillamook. It is the same old moss back, rule or ruin, autocratic faction, that is using R. M. Watson as a willing tool to make a political and personal fight upon Mr. Eddy. The voters of the county are nor saying much. When they do it will be to resenttbese mean and silly insinuations that are being thrown so constantly at the gentleman whom they have the highest respect for and whom they have honored to look after the in terests of the county in the state legisla ture on two occasions. To Mr. Eddy be longs the credit of the bright outlook for securing an appropriation for Tillamook bar in the next river and harbor bill. It is well known that Mr. Eddy did not ask any political favors lor himself or his ool, etc friends for the part he played in the elec tion of the two senators and congress man, preferring rather if there were any , political favors to be obtained it should be bestowed upon Tillamook county by the Oregon delegation securing an appro priation for the improvement of Tilla- m >ok bar. That is what Mr. Eddy has done for Tillamook, and instead of com mending him, the Independent foolishly j ridicules him, and, consequently, those j who pupported him. We have taken | some pains to ascertain the sentiment of I the voters in Tillamook, and find that i on Co. and they ateonlv waiting for an opportunity , Portland to rally to Mr. Eddy’s support should he desire it, and not only so, but to send I (A. OR the rule and ruin faction, and those who i train with it, again into political obli id. vion. The voters of Tillamook county | know full well for what purpose the rule or ruin faction is wanting to get into the political saddle, but the voters can not be humbugged by any silly insinua- ; ; tions that may be made by the rule or ; ruin, autocratic faction, through their mouthpiece R. M. Watson. There is one thing certain, whether Mr. Eddy -re pre. sents Tillamook in the state legislature again, or should he become either U.S. district attorney, circuit judge, congress man or even U.S. senator, Tillamook peo ple will be proud of him—with the excep tion of the rule or ruin faction’s hench ing, men and stool pigeons. arke Co, RISON. -RIBAU built across the Nehalem. And there is the bone of contention in Tillamook county. It seeins if it is impracticable to build a county bridge at Nehalem City. But a fine crossing exists at Upper Nt- halem City, two miles above the lower town. This feature complicates the Tillamook situation. Nehalem City is a town of about 200 population, Its hotel is a substantial structure of 30 rooms, and with good food. There is also a handsome school building, a drug store, two general stores, two saloons, a blacksmith shop and a real estate office for townsite bo nners. Nehalem City is on the site of the old saw mill of Nelson & Patton that was burned several years ago. The saw mill of the Wheeler Lumber com pany is situated six miles below, but their logging company has its headquar ters at Nehc’ »n City. The Vosburg lands at the town wharf. It was not learned whether she could run up to Upper Nehalem City ; but it would doubtless be easy to dredge a channel and the bridge would surely make a town there of importance. The Clatsop contingent had to walk 15 miles from Hug Point to Nehalem City on the outward trip. It was pretty tough on them. Thev rode horseback in returning, which was not quite so heavy a stunt but somewhat fatiguing for a 25 mile jaunt. The steam tug Geo. R. Vosburg tried an experiment last week by successfully towing a raft, containing 100,000 feet of logs from Nehalem to Astoria. We some months ago showed in the Headlight that we thought this could be done under favorable weather conditions and proper rafting, the same as on the great lakes, but good-bye to raft should dirty wea ther be encountered when outside or when crossing the bars. During the sum mer months it is practicable to tow logs from Tillamook to the Columbia river, not so, however, in the winter. Good i spruce logs can be obtained in Tillamook Bay for $4.50 a thousand, and less than that at Nehalem, so towing logs to the Columbia river, where they range from $8 to $9 a thousand, ought to be profit able business for tug boats if anyone will go into the business and take the risk. But loggers don’t want to give 60 days on their logs and should have the money in hand before they start to go out over the bar. Tillamook City, it is plain, is not to be made the terminus of the Portland, Ne halem & Tillamook Railroad, but may obtain a jerk-water branch line to the terminus that will be established on the bay, should that company be fortunate in securing the money to build that road. W. Reid gives his reasons why Tillamook City cannot be made the terminus, and from a manufacturing point of view they are logical and cannot be disputed. This makesit plain that Tilkimook City will have a rival town as a competitor at no distant date, which also may make a bid for the county seat, should a large manu facturing population find employment in mills and factories on the bay. A few years may bring about agreat change in Tillamook. He was called to Cottage Grove Friday night to assist in an operation to remove an eye from Mrs. Aunnicutt, who has been blind in one eye for 35 years, and it had been deemed ad visible to remove the useless member. The operation was to be per formed, ¿this morning and the woman was placed on the operating table and the attending surgeons got their instru ments in rediness tor the operation when the woman shouted that the Lord had restored her sight. Those in attendance were greatly sur prised at this outburst, but the good eye was closed and she was shown several articles and could see them plain ,lv with the eye that had been blind for years and called the articles by name. There were half a dozen witnesses of the occurrence anil all were dumbfounded. The woman bad spent several hours in prayer previous to the time for the op eration and just before going on the Notice to Creditors. operating table offered a final prayer to God to restore her sight. Sh** naturally Notice is Hereby Given.—That the under signed has been duly appointed by the feels that her prayer was answered. The 58th Congress, when it regularly assembles in December, will be called upon to remove from the statute books three laws under which the Government is being systematically robbed each year of hundreds nt thousands, if not millions, of dollars worth of public lands. 'I he robbers are not in all cases violating the letter of the law, and as long as these laws remain in force they cannot be reached, but thev are violating the spirit of the law, and escape only on tcchni calities. The fiylit begun in the last days of the 57th Congress, to bring about the repeal of the timber and stone act, the desert land act. and the commutation clause of the homestead act, is to be re newed with vigor, and the friends, as well as the enemies of reform, are even now preparing to enter the fray, each side determined to win.
