COMBS WORLD FOR BRAINS LS ths The seventy-second annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science was opened at Belfast. The address of James R. Dewar., president elect, was large ly devoted to a review of progress of physical chemistry. In the course of his remarks President Dewar refer red to recent munificent benefactions to science and education, and espe cially to the gift of Andrew Carnegie and the late Cecil Rhode«. Referring to Mr. Carnegie’s endow ment of Scottish universities and the foundation of an educational in stitution at Washington as a more direct benefit to higher education than Mr. Rhodes* bequests. Prof. De war remarked that the establishment of the institution at Washington meant a scouring of the old world as well as the new for the best men in every department, In fact, he said, the assiduous collecting of brains for the benefit of America was sim- ilar to the collecting of rare books and works of art which Americans were now carrying on so lavishly. Speaking of applied chemistry, Prof. Dewar made a scathing criti cism of the “deplorable backward ness” of Great Britain in this field as compared to foreign countries. German chemical manufacturers, the speaker declared, enjoyed a prac tical monopoly which enabled them to exact huge profits from the rest of the world and to establish in an almost unassailable position indus tries which were largely founded on basic discoveries made by English chemists, but which had never been of properly developed in the land 1 their birth. The explanation of this “disas- trous phenomenon” Prof, Dewar gave in three words—“want of edu- cation.” He said it was the failure of schools to turn out and of manu facturers to demand properly train ed men which explained Great, Brit ain’s loss of valuable industries and the country’s precarious hold on oth ers. Dawson K«*ele*f«*t l<* Petit ln«a the Pope to Ei Voluntary Observer. eonrage Pries«« and Wonka la R ison . R ibaldi , 1903 I An article about diving in St. Nich olas tells the following story about Lambert, a famous English diver: The fish in some waters are a hind rance and are greatly disliked by the diver. Perhaps the diver’s worst foe is the conger eel. This creature attacks in swarms and is/most daring and ex ceedingly vicious. The congers bark like dogs» and never hesitate in the leact to bite a man. “At one tune my right hand,” said a div^r to us, “was exposed for a moment while in the water, when one of these fierce creatures made a dash for it and took a large piece from the back of the hand. It bled freely and 1 was obliged to come up to the surface and get it dressed.” “But how about the sharks? Don’t you find them troublesome?” “Not very. You see, sharks are like rats; leave them alone, and they run away if they catch sight of you. Cor ner a shark and he will fight. ‘‘But if you want a shark story, I can give you one of Lambert’s; he once had a thrilling fight with one at the bottom of the Indian ocean. He had been sent to the island of Diego Garcia to fix cop per sheets on a coal bunk that had been fouled by a steamer, and was an noyed during his operations by the same shark for nearly a week. “The monster was temporarily scared away, however, every time Lambert opened the escape valve in his helmet and allowed some air to rush out. One day Lambert signaled to his attendants for a big sheath knife and a looped rope. “Having these, Lambert used his bare hand as a bait and waited until the shark commenced to turn on its back, when he stabbed it repeatedly, passed the noose around its body and signaled for it to be drawn up. The liver brought home the shark’s back bone as a trophy.” Harford, Æb and SPANISH MUSIC, It is intereiyting to note how a r.a- ion’s favorite musical instrument is a key to the national character. Thus, ’or instance. England’s musical instru- nent is the organ, Scotland’s the bag- pipK Ireland’s the harp, Italy’s the Holin, Spain’s the guitar. Germany’s the flute, the United States—south the t»ar.jo and north the piano. Spain's lffinity seems strongest, and. junt now, s of especial public interest. The gui tar is ubiquitous in Spain. Its tink ling, sweetish harmonies may be heard to the battlefield, in my lady’s bower, n the mule cart, in the barber’s shop, n saloon, hotel and the highways and jyways. Spanish music is pretty rather than powerful; its boleros, -igadvors and fandango« gnv rat ».er than grand. It savors more of dagger ind hatpin than bayonet and borrh. "¡lancing back in guitar hnstor'y to the lays of King David, when this instru ment was known as a kinnor. one secs that while it was used to re fresh Saul it was also carried by depraved female minstrels, as evidenced by the Prophet Isaiuh’s ironical suggestion to them to ‘‘take a kinnor. go about the city, make sweet melody, sing many songs, that you may rot be forgotten.” The jopular Spanish air of “El Sereney" is a capital illustration of the charac teristics of Spanish music and Spain. Its prrtty, thin strains remind one of the court rv of the muleteer and friar. Rlrrh Cannes for the Orient. Bangor mantifactnrara are «ending ?anoe« of birch and canra* to Pale, tine, Japan.
