Inauguratrd by Secretary Shaw Which Will Insure Retter C. & E. Thayer. Mannfactnrera* Mnterlnla During the Year 1902 Coiupriaed One Half Goods Sent Into Thia Country. Growth in the importation of man ufacturers’ materials and the increas ing share which such materials form in the total imports is the most remark able feature of the foreign commerce of the United States in the fiscal year just ended. Manufacturers’ materials form in 1902 nearly one-half of the total importations, and show a re markable increase over preceding years, while other classes of imports show but a. very slight increase. Combining the two classes of ar ticles for use in manufacturing, those “in a crude condition’’ and those “whol ly or partially manufactured for use as materials in the manufactures and mechanic arts,” it is found that the total value of importations for use in manufacturing, which amounted in 1881 to $217,571,551, were in 1902 $418,- 776,681. They formed in 1881 33.44 per cent, of the total imports, and in 1902 46.36 per cent, of the total imports. This phenomenal growth becomes even more striking when it is com pared with the growth in importation of all other articles than those for use in manufacturing. The total value of “imports other than manufacturers materials” amounted in 1881 to $433,- 047,448, and in 1902 to $484.550,390. and formed in 1881 66.56 per cent, of the total imports, and in 1902 but 53.64 per cent, of the total imports. Thus, while importations of manufacturers’ mate rials have practically doubled from 1881 to 1902, importations of articles other than manufacturers’ materials have increased kut about 12 per cent. THE PASSING OF NEWGATE. The Fsmoo. Js.ll of Engll.h Hl.torr Which tlm. Stood for Catari.« Be inn Torn Down. The work of demolishing Newgate jail, the historic old prison, so long a feature of the city of London, has been begun. The decision <o «ear down Newgate prison was taken a long time ago, but various causes have hindered the be ginning of the work. The building ol the prison was begun in 1770. and be fore its completion part of it was de stroyed by the Gordon rioters in 17»». The destruction was made good in 17S2. At one time Newgate was the principal prison of London, but < f late years it has been used merely as a temporary house of detention forprn oners awaiting trial at the adjoinmg central criminal court, known to all the world as the Old lleiley. For a long period criminals sen tenced to death were har.gfd in front of Newgate. Atteutiuu tu the Interest of It is stated that a hospital for the treatment of emergency - ----- cases will be established on the grounds of each of the 22 plants of the Amer ican Steel and Wire company. The plans for the building», which will be as nearly uniform Mi conditions will permit, are being prepared by a Philadelphia architect, and the total cost to the company of build ings and equipment will not fall short of $300,000. The determination of the company to establish a hospital at each of its plants was arrived at after a year’s experiment with a temporary emerg ency hospital, erected for the com pany in Allentown, Pa. Little was said of the new movement at the time the Allentown hospital was put into service, and few’ persons outside of the officials were aware of the company’s intentions. It did not re quire a full year to prove the value of such an institution, either in point of bodily comfort to the unfortunate iron workers who were forced to enter it for treatment, or in point of ultimate expense to the corporation. For several months the company has been shaping its plans for hospitals nt all its plants, and it is calculated that within the next six months all will be ready to receive patients. Each hospital will be of plain brick construction, two stories in height, with baths, sitting rooms, li brary, dining-room and sleeping apartments for the nurses, will have quarters for six beds, that number being figured as the maximum of cases that may need attention at the same time. A corps of six nurses and two drug gists and thorough ambulance serv ice will be requisite for each hos pital, in addition to the resident physician.
