Sappington and |. \V. Max well that the Headlight had cut a bigger swarth in politics than tliev cared to admit, so much so that it had been in st runieutal to some extent in their defeat, consequently they gave the editor of the Headlight a tongue lashing which made the school house in that precinct ring with language too false and too obscene, and unbecoming an ex state senator, to* a resjieetablc newspaper to rejieat. In newspaperdom this is considered the highest compliment that can be paid a fearless and outspoken editor, so we took Maxwell's and Sappington’s re marks that wav, feeling ourself highly fl ittered at the applause. We can assure these gentlemen that the Headlight will repay these compliments with interest when tliev make another attempt to hang on to the hind teat of the republi can party. Another thing which tliev must com mend the Headlight for The editor made an open tight upon them on public grounds, and lie never pretended to be their friend before their faces, and then turned round ami scabbed them in tin’ back, for that whs the characteristics of a large numlier ol Maxwell s ami Sap pington's “ friends" on Saturday . The next time Maxwell and Sapping ton gets into a political tight, we would advise them not to underestimate the influence of the Headlight and th power of the man behind the pen. There is one thing w hich the Headlight would bring forcefully to the attention of republicans delegates in the second justice district, and that is to nominate a person for justice of the peace of this justice district who is not under the in fluence of the one mail ride. The law- abiding citizens look to the republican party to do this, for all will admit that this is something which is necessary. There was a surprise at’the Hoquarton precinct on Saturday which have set a number of people to thinking B. L. baldy’s name had been placed in nomi nation tor a delegate, when upjuin|x*d R. M. Had Watson received his instructions from the one man rule ? * * * As the political tight in the primaries were made on Eddy, Mason and Alder man. and as they have come out victor ious. the Headlight believes that the republican convention will l>e carrying out the sentiment of the republicans in the county it these gentlemen are re nominated by acclamation. * Ct w Bv April 1st Columbia County will have a cash surplus of $10,0i»0 in the treasure. C hicago , March 14.—Billed as a choice sack of potatoes, a young man has ar rived in Chicago from Kansas City tied up in a sack. For three days ami a half he had been confined in the sack, and during that time he had traveled close to 700 miles in a freight ear. The sack which covered him was inclosed in an open fruit car. The traveler, who is Martin J. Klans, digger, a machinist of Kansas Cit v, was nearlv famished when he was cut from F his prison at the Chicago & North western freighthouse bv a friend who had been waiting for a dav and a half in the city for him to arrive. Klans- digger began his journey with only a quart of water and two pounds of crackers in the sack with him, this being a condition of the wager of $3u0 which caused him to make the perilous trip. When released, Klansdiggcr was almost blinded by the dust which had crept into the sack, and his throat was so parched that he could hardly speak, his little cask of water having been split when he had been on his journey onlv a day. For nearlv three davs he had been without water, and he stated when he was able to talk that had it not rained Wednesday he would certainly have died of thirst. During most of the storm the car in which he was packed was side- tracked out in small country town, and the water came through a crack in the roof and fell on the sack. The burlap became quite wet, and lie was thus en abled to suck from the cloth a tew drops, which allayed his thirst. News of a dastardly outrage and attempt to intimidate Dr. P. S. Byrne. Mayor of Spokane, transpired on Fri day. Last Tuesday night a mysterious explosion took place a few yards from the Mayor’s house, in the suburbs shat tering glass and blowing a hole in the earth. It is thought about two sticks of dynamite were used. Fridav the Mavor received an anonymous letter, threatening to blow up his house unless lie changed his policy. Detectives have the case in hand, and it is announced they hope to capture the perpetrators of the outrage in a short time. Senator Berry, of Arkansas, represent ing the minority of the senate com mittee on commerce, presented a report in opposition to the pending ship sub sidy bill. The minority deny the ac- curancy of both the predictions and the facts of both majority report. They urged that the bill is w rong in principle and declare it will utterly fail of the accomplishment of its proposed objects. They, also, say that, while it is not so complicated as the subsidy bill of the fifty-sixth congress, it is, in some re spects, even more objectionable.
