The Charles W. Nordstom case that
ended iu Seattle, in the punishment of
the murderer, was one of the most re­
markable criminal contests in the history
of American jurisprudence. It was sur­
passed only in the length of time that
elapsed between the commission of the
crime and the end of it all by the once
famous Kring case in St. Louis. It was
of national interest, because it showed
how a shrewd lawyer could, for years on
years, by what is regarded as perfectly
legitimate chicanery, prevent the carry­
ing out of what was confessed to have
been a perfectly just sentence.
The two cases, the Kring and the Nord­
strom, show where multiplicity ofcourts
and facilities of appeals may be used ef
iectively to stave off justice. This is a
matter that the American Bar assoctia-
tion and other legal organizations could
well afford to devote lengthy and serious
consideration to, for there is no question
that such permissible proceedings have
done more than all the mou tilings of
demagogues to weaken respect for the
law as at present laxly administered,
seemingly almost exclusively for the
criminal.
It is all very well to throw every pos­
sible safeguard about a man accused
of a crime, but, in the Nordstrom case
the throwing of these safeguards about
a man has to nearly resembled a lamen­
table parody on justice. As the governor
of the state of Washington well and truly
said of this very case, it is just such mak­
ing of mockery of justice that has been
provocating of lynch law.
In England and on the continent of
Europe, where justice’s sword is not
tied up by threads of technicalities,
Ivchings are utterly unknown. This is
not because the people of the old world
are more phiegmatic or more indifferent
to crime than those of this county, but
simply because they know that there
will be moderately swift justice and the
law will not be hampered by technicali­
ties of every kind. If the people of Amer­
ica could have equal assurance, lynch­
ing, except in parts of the South, would
be virtually unknown.
The criminal has the right to reason­
able protection against overhasty jus
tice, but he has no right to make the
law a parody. The public against which
he has offended also has rights and these
rights should be paramount. The fewer
there shall be of such cases as the Kring
and the Nordstrom the better it will I k
for the United States. The sooner there
shall be reform such as shall prevent
shrewd lawyers from thwarting justice
for years and years, the sooner there will
be assurance that the days of mob sava­
gery shall pass away forever.

with Mrs. Grace Smith, Thursday.
We are all widows and orphans here
on Boulder, and we’re having a high
old lonesome of it, too.
Mrs. Maggie Nicklaus and daughter,
Ida, and her sons Tommie and Herman,
came down from Hebo last Friday for a
short visit with friends in this neighbor­
hood.
The cheese factory is closed and we
understand that Mr. and Mrs. Jackson
will soon move back to Beaver.
Mrs. Chopard had the pleasure of en­
tertaining a few friends at dinner Sun­
day. The party included Mrs. Grace
Smith and children, Mrs. Lida Brady
and son Lloyd and Miss Ida Nicklaus.

declares that enough has passed now by
patent to materially deplete the timber­
ed area of the country “and not another
acre should pass out of the government
control until the law regulates its use so
as to preserve it as forest land and for­
feit the patent for violation of the regu­
lations.’’ The Call urges that henceforth
every man who buys timber land should
be subject to official and expert oversight
in harvesting the merchantable timber.
That paper notes the destructive forest
fires in California this summer as show­
ing the dire need of doing somethifig to
preserve, protect and care for the timber
that is left.
This is one phase of the matter and
perhaps the more important one, but
there are other abuses that need correc­
tion and to which it is presumed the
American Forestry association will give
its attention. The conservation of the
national forests and the protection of
timber on the reserved as well as the un­
reserved lands is much more effectively
done now than formerly and with such
further modifications in forestry legisla­
tion as has been demonstrated by ex­
perience to be necessary our public tim­
ber lands can be as well cared for as are
those of European countries whose gov­
ernment give constant and most careful
attention to forest preservation. The
progress to the attainment of the exist­
ing policy in this matter has been slow
and more remains to be done before we
shall have a thought and adequate sys-
tern, but there is no doubt that it will
come in time.
