THE TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, MARCH 16, 1899 OFF ON THE BURDEN. | breezy bard of Tarkio, Mo., strikes ular chord in the lines following, l>oets troubled that way will do to take the hint and avoid the Itv. Hear the Tarkio troubadour g off "the white man's burden;” iug off—your breed's all right, kill the crazy poets— ve, brain them all on sight, bind with strong ro|>e harness hese fluttered, luny folk— ve pity on the people /ho bear the rhymester’s yoke. off “ the white man's burden’’— This Hecate from the pit, «1 veil this grisly terror By sitting down on it: r open speech, and simple, Ten thousand times made plain— leir jingles deep in Hades Will burden them with pain. ¡ft up "the white man's burden”— Place high on funeral pyre, nd bind on it these poets. Then burn them all with fire; o—swear they shall not enter The roads the white men tread, ,o. find them—if they’re living— Be sure you leave them dead. 'Tia Holy Land— Not far from mother’s breast, And many a weary grown-up man, With sad soul, heavy, aching, Could he lie down In this sweet town, Might keep his heart from breaking. of C. & E. Thayer THE RIVER OF TIME gave a solemn pledge and called on Heaven o hear ; otir arms, we swore, were Freedom’s own, o freedom consecrate and her alone ; r valor sprung from her chaste bosom, given Freedom’s cause forever; and her levin t’e forged upon the footsteps of her throne: er sword unclasping from her glitter ing zone chin our hands she placed, and blessed us shriven. olemn mockery of her holy trust! 'ur troth forgot and slaked our noble zeal, r brittle honor shattered in the dust iotous people drunk with conquest’s lust n bacchanalian rout we onward reel, aid’gainst her turn her own ensan guined s*eel. CUDDLEDOWNTOWN. iddledowntown is near Cradleville, iVhere the sand men pitch their tents ; In Downsland, You understand, In the state of Innocence ; is right by the scource of the River of I Life, IWhich the Grandma Starks watch over, While honev-bug bees, ’Neith funny-bug trees, Croon lullabys in sweet clover. 'is a wondrous village, this Cuddle downtown, For its people are all sleepers ; And never a one. From dark till dawn, Has ever a use for peepers. ■lev harness gold butterflies to Sun- • beams— Play horse with them, a-screaming. While never a mite. Throughout the night. E'er dreams that he’s dreaming. 1 Cuddledowntown there are Choo, choo cars In all the beautiful streets ; And round bald heads And curly heads Are the engineers one meets ; rom Piggyback town to Pattvcakeville The cars run, hissing, a-screaming While wonderful toys, For girls and boys. Can always be had by reaching. O. Cuddledowntown is a village of dreams Where little tired legs find rest ; ’Tis in God’s hand— For years it has been one of the boasts of Americans that thiscountrycould feed the world and supply it with the manu factured products. To day the nation is giving a practical illustration of the truth of the claim. Since the first of January theexports of food cereals from America have averaged very nearly 1,000,000 bushels a day and the great granaries of the wheat and com sections aré still overflowing with their surplus, a surplus that can not be exhausted with present transportation limitations before the fields of the nation yield a greater supply in 1899. Great as the increase oftbe nation's grain exports is, it is exceeded by the more surprising and more important item of manufac tured exports. The reports of the treas ury bureau of statistics for the seven months of the fiscal year show that the exportation of domestic manufacture is $23,000,000 greater than the highest re. cord ever before made in the correspond ing mouths of the fiscal year. During the seven months ending February 1, 1899, the exports of domestic manufac tures amounted to $182,336,503, or an average of $l,00C,00O a day for every business day of that period. Stupendous as these figures appear they do not, by a very great deal, re present anything like the actual increase in the manufacturing business of the country. The imports of manufactures for the last seven months have decreased $35,000,000 from the imports for the same period a year ago. That means that the home consumption of American mannfactures has been increased by that amount. This, added to the increase naturally demanded by the increase popu. lation, brings the total increase in Ameri can manufactures up to nearly $1,500,. 000 a day over the record of a vear ago. In the face of such fignres the man is a traitor to his section, to his country, who insists upon preaching calamity and predicting national misfortunes and local woe for the people who insist npon supporting the policy of an administra tion under which the nation has pros pered so gloriously. The Kansas legislature has adjourned, and among the laws enacted is one re ducing telegraph tolls within the state 40 per cent. The telegraph companies will fight the law in the courts. Another important measure provides for the man ufacture of binding twine in the state penitentiary, and appropriates $40,000 for the installing of machinery and $150.- 000 for a revolving fund to carry on the work.
