THE TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, OCTOBER 6, 1898. WEATHER REPORTS. From Tillamook’s Val uable Observer. We are in receipt of the monthly and senii-annual report* of the weather con dition» in Tillamook county. They are highly interesting, and our readers would do well to preserve them, for they are full of useful inforniatiou. They are furnished by Captain Joseph J. Dawson, who is the voluntary observer in Tilla mook county for tho United States weather bureau. Speaking of his wea ther reports the Captaiu had this tossy: ‘•A German, from Portland, represent ing a small colony, having received a copy of T he H eadlight , with my monthly weather report published in it, he went to headquarters in Portland to see if it was an official report. A com parison being made with my duplicate report sent in, he was told where to rind me, and he could rely on the information I would give trim. He came. I showed him my apparatus and paper, and re cords of the weather for the last year; also, information about government lands in Tillamook. He being well pleased and satisfied, left for Portland forthwith, bikeing it all the way to bring some of his folks in to explore the county (or lands for all of them. So much good done by the monthly report. Seeing 1 have made up my semi-annual report, I concluded to make a copy of the same fur T he H eadijgiit to pub lish in full, allowing the whole amount of rain, snow, and ice; also the highest and lowest temperature for the year beginning September 22nd, 1897, to Septemlier 22nd, 1898. as collected from the instruments of the U.S.W.B., at my station, Baid copy will be a true copy of the duplicates of this are sent to the Portland office, one of which goes to Washington. Seeing the enconiums I receive in relation to my report, I think those persons who desire to labor with me for the benefit of our county, and their friends whom they wish to come to Tillamook, need not hesitate to send a copy of T he H eadlight to them for that purpose.” Captaiu Dawson is desirous of people offering a few remarks on the weather reports and his suggestions. Having tied twelve months’ experience as vol untary observer the editor of T he H ead light appreciate the efforts of the captain in keeping these reports, for they are up to date, and become valuable in formation, particularly as Tillamook county is reaching out for more settlers. Heie is proof positive of the weather conditions in this county. Perhaps we do have a few ' Scotch mists,” but it is necessary to keep the grass green all the year round, making dairying profitable. This is believed to be the first instant where such a remedy has been applied to a person of masculine persuasion. It is a startling reminder of the rapid disappearance of sex distinc tions. It is told of General Butler that to wards the close of his career, when lie ranked at the top of thecriminal lawyers in Massachusetts, lie was sent for by a prisoner charged with murder, Upon hie arrival at the cell the prisoner cried out with much evident distress of mind ami with all the accent of imperiled in nocence: “General Buller, I want yon to defend me.
