Tlie American project« for a Pacific ca ble had lanKuiahed since 1870, when it was fl rat propoaed l»y Cyrui Field, but the dependencies of Great Britain in tiie South Pacific have revived the agitation for cable connection with the North Ameiivan continent, and offer to con- tribuate one-tliird of the cost to Great Britain and Canada will each contribute a third. The question of an all-Britiah Pacific cable has been frequently under discus* eion, and lias been considered by three colonial conlereiicea, one in 1887, one in 1894 and the last in 1896. At the latter a report favorable to the construction of tlie cable waa made, but tlie admiralty reported against it, «nd the cable w<.s not laid. The present agitation of the question by the colonial premiers of Australia has called forth an article by Charles Bright, F R. 8. E.. in the fortnighty, in which, after enumerating the main reasons given for au all-Britisli line, he presents a strong argument in favor of a line to be built and controlled jointly by Great Britain, the United Sudea ami Japan.
