If a stranger happened to be up ami on our sheets last Monday morning bright and early, just as Old Sul began to warm up the highest peaks of the Coast range, he would have been greatly alarmed by the sight he would have seen. With the war over, and all the soldiers embarked for Manila that will be, he could nut have explained the why of the commotion. It was a regular army, headed by our famous hunter J iio . Barker, with Grand Master A. O. U. W., Herrin, Attorney Pogue, Insurance Agent Edmunds D. DeK Bowman and George Stoddard, each armed with a k rifle large enough to kill ail elephant* H at 1000 yards and walking with the step and pride of a soldier. Such was their feeling when they stepped in to the l>oat on that fatal inoni ^~Iir ing for a grand bear hunt on the hills west of Garibaldi. After landing at the appointed place and dividing into parties of two each so that there would be no danger of being eaten up alive by Old Bruin, they start ed up the hillsides, over logs, bogs and fogs. It became wo fuggy, that, towards noon they decided to give up the hunt, but just at that moment a bear was scented. Old Mrs. Bruin, with her two wily sons, were driven into a thicket and ns mother bear thought there must dogs in the neighborhood, she sent her children up tlie nearest tree while she scampered on into the jungle. Barker came upon the rceue at this moment and in a second one little son bear was a cotpae at the foot of the tree, the other son bear, jumping down, got away on account of the -lense fog, so they say. In inticn lees time than it takes to tell it, all parties were on hand with a hur rah. The fact ia, they eacli secretly fol lowed up the leader for tear of hear». Well, Bruin was dead, at least one o( Ills children, and “we killed it”. It was a beauty, at least ll3. inches in length and we are told by reliable parties t hat it weighed between 5 mid 6 p-.un h and was killed by five men and a boy. It was carefully put away in the pocket of a limiting coat for safe keeping, and they returned home. Attorney l’ogua lias the bear. It is his intention to have it sluffed and mounted lor a paper weight ill his office. He will thus lie remined to tell his clients the wonderful story oi “How Five Men and a Boy killed a Bear." We might suggest to our “Spring 1’oet»’’ that here is a brilliant opportuni ty for a parody on “How Betsy and I Killed a Bear.’’ A Poetical Correspondent County Treasurer Cary lias received from a school clerk an order with the following rhyming request for tbe cash: I enclose you this order, To me tis but rash, Unless you could accept ft And send me the cash If the cash is all out A nd the safe is a wreck It will do very well If you just send your check. The treasurer lays no claim to the title of a poet, but upon reading the foregoing lie invoked the muse long enough to leply as follow«: Permit ...e to say I am no poet, But you and the school ina'utn can j ust go it.
