year. Of the 41 votes to be cast at the adoption
21 are necessary to a choice. If the American

ing the appointment of men on the state board
of examiners friendly to it, but 12 additional
will be required to g ve it a monopoly of the
school-book trade ot Oiegou for six years more.
Under the foregoing conditions, nominating

No man should be nominated for superinten­
dent ot public instruction by any party who is
not avowedly opposed to the American Book
Company. Its hold on school patrons of Oregon
is a grevious burden, fr m which they should
be releived as noon as possible. The opportun­
ity for relief will be thorough the next ad< p-

tion whether or not indemnity

doubt as to the culpability of Spain
in the matter, but she has received
from the court a Scotch verdict of
“not proven.’’ Bill the incident is
not closed and no one can yet
