THE TILLAMOOK WEEKLY HEADLIGHT. Battle of the Standards. WASHINGTON. Feb. n.—(Oregonian office Post building.)—“The battle of the standards must be fought ut this fall and again in 1900,” said Representative Tongue, in c nversation with an Oregonian reporter. “It is a fight be tween the gold standard and the free ■ oinage of silver,” he continued, “and there can be no getting around the issus. For my part, I am ready for the contest. I shall go into it with a conviction that right will prevail and that the tiiumph of a sound financial policy will be over whelming. Of course, we know that it is possi ble to cumber matters somewhat and that some men who believe in the gold standard and in maintaining the parity of all money may be frightened by the proposition to retire the green backs, and the various propositi >ns for a nation al banking system, and hesitate abo t voting for the safe and s und financial policy.’’ Repr-sentative Tongue had a talk with the speaker about the condition in Oregon. Mr. Reed has manifested a great deal of interest in the state, and the conditions that exist, because he realises that the results in Oregon cannot but have their effect upon the campaigns for congress in the other states. Mr. Tongue told the speaker that Oregon was a gold-standard state that while some people might shy some what at the word “gold,” yet they believed in the maintenance ot the present standard, and were not in favor of silver monom talisrn and the silver standard, which free coinage would mean At the same time he said that there were a great many people who were not yet ready for the ret rement of the greenbacks, and the substitution in their place o' a national bank currency, which was theoretical in its present shape. He told the speaker that men who would support the republican party and wuo believed in the maintenance of national honor might object to the retiiement of the greenbacks, and when a vote w s lost on the ground of retiring the greenbacks, or the differ ent fiinancia! measures which were proposed by some of the eastern men it was not only lost on that proposition, but went over com pletely into the free-silver camp. There was no middle ground for these men; when they did not vote for the republican candidate they would vote for a silver man out and-out Mr. Tongue told the speaker that he did not be lieve any o the radical measures proposed in congress for a complete reformation of the cur rency could be passed, and he believed th t in pushing them many republican seats would be lojt in the congressional elections. Mr. Tongue is not the only republican who has such views, as many believe that the people are not yet educ ted up to the t oint where the more elaborate schemes of currency reform meet their approval, and that if they leave the sound money ranks because they are afraid the gold men have gone too far, they will not stop short of absolute free silver, be' cause there is really no other landing place for th m.— Oregonian There is a farmer who is yy Enough to take his ee, And study Nature with his ii And think of what he cc. It seems that vigorous action is likely to be taken by the government in regard to the recent decree of Germany exclud ing all American fruits from her mar kets. This wholesale and unjust ex clusion is made on the flimsy pretex that American fruit introduces into Ger many certain vermin and (rests injurious to the fruit interests of that country. That Germany has a perfect right to es tablish such regulations as will protect her g rowers from foreign injurious in sects is easily conceded, but in the case in point no examination of consignment* whatever has been made, but all fruit ami liuraeiy stock, good and bail alike, was forbidden to cross the border, thus entailing great hardship upon her ex porters. This is in line with the action of that country concerning the impor tation of American meat products, around which such ridiculous and un- neccessnry restrictions were hedged that the result was to largely exclude them from Germany’s market. This was exactly what was desired by her, and this is exactly what is hojied for in this matter of fruits. The truth is that our farm products have l»een so favor ably receive«I in the German maikets Hint her officials view with alarm the propirlions to which our trade is grow ing, and stealing away their own home market, and their intention is evident Io do everything |saisible to harass our merchants to such an exlent that they will desert German markets. Il is un derstood that th« United States officials have made |»oiiited protests against tliis unjust discriniiimtion, audit is thought that the President may take sharp re taliatory action, unless the Germans see the unwisdom of their action and re cede from their position.
