However I take it that ’tie represents a class, and as a representative he may deserve an an swer. That the lx»ys in question have made general nusances of themselves, I do not deny, and they may also have committed petty offenses that if proven would have subjected them lo punishment. On several occasions 1 have gone lo the City Recorder and the City Attorney, and told them of certain offenses thu the boys were said to have committed, I and asked whether 1 should arrest the | boys, on the evidence before me, ami I in every instance I was advised not to do so unless the evidence was strong, and direct, and sufficient to convict, i was warned not to pile up expenses against the the city ill any uncertain suit, ami I have never been able to get sufficient 1 evidence in anything to satisfy the Officials. One reason for this has been 1 that the parties injured have refused lo admit knowing anything and persons whom I believe to have witnessed certain wrong doings have professed entire ignorance. You yourself, Mr. Editor, have refus ed to prosecute the boys for stealing ft nil out of your own orchard! What then could I do when the people have refused to stand by me? Fastaband was in the city this week and reports the goverment work at the bay to be nearing completion. Miles Fletcher Co., have about 6,500 lbs. of salmon on hand, a portion of their catch this fall, 5,000 lbs. being salt and 1,500 lbs. being smoked, which they expect to put on lhe market in the spring. Krebs Bros, are now running a crew at their Little Neslucca saw mill, and expect to be through at that place in a short time, then they will run their mill at Woods during the winter. Siind Lake H. Fariner, of Bay City, is <iijoyiiij> himself liumling and fishing along the lake. Dim ami Charlei Atkinson are at work preparing more cranberry ground for planting in the spring. There has been a large amount ot money spent in the cranberry business up to this date, and so far with very little piofit. This year there should have been a full crop, on a part of, King de Colion’s hog ami the prospects wer« splendid in lhe spring, hut the crop was destroyed on the 26th of April by a severe frost, which froze the fiuit buds. They will continue enlarging their beds, and be prepared for a crop when the elements premit. Bear are uncommonly plenty this year. Several have been captured and the signs are seen everywhere.
