OFFICIAL CONSPIRACY. go Other Government Would Submit to Such Conduct by Ite SrrvaiiU. During an address recently delivered by Hou. H. H. Carlton ut High Shoals, he Baid, as reported by the Athens corre spondent of the Atlanta Constitution: To forcibly present this condition of affairs to the people of this country let us suppose that the queen of ¡gland and her ministers should traverse that country and in letters and speeches, us Mr. Cleveland and his cabinet and cuck oos are doing today, tell tlie English people that thoir shilling and pound sterling were not really worth more than half for which they were puid out anil passed; that they were “unsound” and “depreciated ami dishonest stuff,” how long would the English people tol erate such utterances and such conduct on I ho part of their government offi cials, and how long would the English government stand under such a condi tion of affairs? In another view, how long would any government in this world prosper and exist if tlreir rulers and hired officials shonld go uround and preach to the peo ple that their lawful money was tin- sfiund, depreciated stuff and not worth more than one-half what the govern ment puid it out and received it at? If such conduct in England on the part of its government officials would be injury to and conspiracy aguiust the govern ment, why is it not so in America? If crime in England or any other foreign country, beyond all question it is crim inal to do so in America. Then, fellow citizens, it must follow conclusively that, if these silver dollars coined by tliis government from the foundation up to lbifl, with 371J^ grains, were sound and honest dollars, then every other silver dollar that has been coined by this government, as none has ever been coined with less than 371 >4 grains, must necessarily be sound ami honest dollars. If one is sound and honest, all must be sound and honest ; if one is a dishonest and depreciated dollar, then all the silver dollars ever coined by the government are dishonest. They’ll Squeeze Ils. Upon interviewing the head of one of the great foreign exchange hotlses of New York upou the probability of the United States keeping up gold pay ments, thiH gentleman, who is one of the brightest of American financiers, said: If no serious developments occur in European politics—w hich latter urepreg nant with danger to the money market —it may be possible to keep np gold payments until next spring. Immense efforts uro made by the banking and commercial interests in New York city —by ngitative means—to stem the bi- metallistic tide surging throughout this country. Yet it is very doubtful if the next congress will agree with the ad ministration upon any measure to re move from the United States treasury ....... ......... o__ tho terrible incubus of .. maintaining tlie gold payments—viz, keeping k..r.»n np the monometallistiu standard as expounded " Cleveland -r ■ ■ by the European capitalists, and Carlisle. Even if the gold exchangeable notes should bo withdrawn, no relief would ...... e, for the banks would then all the e< ime, more tightly clutch their holdings of the gold coin, only furnishing it under ¡uui. the inducement of a high premium. Neither will the European banking I intereht or governments consent to al low gold in largo quantities to come to this country, even were wo to offer in place United States bonds. European capital will not take for our debit bal ance our securities, as was the case for- merly. Consequently .we must procure gold in settling our debts, though gold command a premium. We are Tn a^mTiar position toward Europe as a western firmer is whose Place is beavilyhypothecated and whose products do not earn the mortgage in terest. SILVER ABROAD. gALVATION IS FREE!!!
