The Well-Known fishing Guide Is Now
a .Justice.
A number of sportsmen of this city,
says the Oregonian, have for several
years lieen accustomed to spend their
vacation fishing in the Doherty, over in
the Coast range. They have always em­
ployed as guide, and incidentally as
philosopher and friend, a man who
knows the river better than do the fish,
and who has no equal in breaking camp,
packing to better fishing grounds, or in
tossing flapjacks
lie was familiarly
known as Bill Smith. Now the hearts of
the sportsmen are broken, as, on writing
to secure their favorite guide, they find
thrt he has been elected a justice of the
peace, and is known as Judge William
Smith, and that the duties and dignities
of his office forbid that he should act as
guide any longer They feel, however,
that he will make as good a guide in the
unknown depths of the law as he used to
be to the best pools of the Doherty, and
are preparing to furnish him with a law
library which will be adequate to all his
requirement«. The boys will have to
tackle the Doherty without a guide this
summer, and endeaver to learn the
scientific curve for flapjacks
