close their doors The first intimation
of the crisis was when the Oregon
National bank closed its doors Thursday.
This was not unexpected as the bank
has lieen considered shaky for some
time. The closing of the North West
Loan and Trust Company followed, John
B. Markle being president of both insti­
tutions. The principal depositor in the
Oregon National Bank was Sheriff Kelley
who had something like (300,000 of
county money on deposit
Friday the
Uni n Saving Bank and the Commercial
National Bank closed up and on Satur­
day the Portland Savings Bank and the
Ainsworth National Bank were com­
piled to suspend payment. There was
a heavy run on the Merchants’ National
but the president of this institution was
enabled by mortgaging his |»er>onal
property to raise enough funds to title
them during the day.
All the suspended banks claim to have
more assets i han liabilities and business
men seem to be confident hat dejjositors
will not sustain any loss.
C ritical Time* In Denver.
D enver , Col., July 27.—The lynching
r»f the Italian, Arata, last night has
sh )wn the innnen.se crowd of idle work­
men at present in Denver what can be
accomplished by violence, and there is a
dread in the minds of many citizens that
a riot of enormous size, having for its
purpose the looting of the city, may
break out at any time. The thousands
of unemployed workingmen already here
being augmented daily by others from
throughout the state, who an* gradually
working their way to Denver. The
county ami city ami numerous charity
organizations are doing their best to feed
ami shelter the great army of penniless
people, but are incapable of meeting the
demands. The banks of the city have
called ujhiii the Unitel States troops at
Fort Logan, of which there are 700, to
l>e ready to protect their institutions in
case of an outbreak Some of the banks
are United States depositories and thus
have the right to ask the government
for protection. The unemployed mem­
bers of the militia ami the Chaffee light
artillery are now under arms al the
armory awaiting developments. Mayor
Von Horn has issued a proclamation re­
questing all g mj 1 citizen* not to congre­
gate on the streets, as it may leul to an
outbreak.

cern today requested the privilege of
covering the office of the buildings at
the fair for the cost of the material and
labor. Applications from mercantile
houses of all sorts are coming in every
mail. A local firm representing a large
number of eastern manufacturing bouses
say they intend to get up a very elabor­
ate exhibition of different proprietary
articles. Some of these exhibits are
prominent features at the Columbian
exhibition
Many of these will la*
brought to California intart. The Chinese
Six Companies have subscribed |5000 to
the midwinter fair. In addition to this
they will bring the Chinese exhibit from
the Chicago fair hither and will have a
numl>er of new features. Among the
things promised is a floating Chinese
village. The executive committee will
appoint an international jury of awards.
The general reception of exhibits will
commence October 15, and no article will
be admitted after December 20.

of debate in the committee on the home

tion. He was still smarting under the
lashing administered by Gladstone Tues­

ness, giving his opinion of the closure as
applied by tin* government. He was
