What Ills Free Wool Bill Would Mean to Our Agriruiturlsta. Some one pointed out to Mr Springer that we collected $0,500,000 of revenue last year from wool, which bis bill pro- poseti to ndmit free, and that his scaling down of duties on other things involve«] a further reduction of revenuo, on last year’s importations as a basis, of $19,- 600,(MX) more. "Oh, there will be no loss of revenue,” he in effect replied. "The lower duties on woolens and worstetla will invite larger importations, so that just as much revenuo will result from the lower rates as was last year ob tained from the McKinley duties.” Do the Ameri--an [¡eoplo realize the signification of that brief statement? Last year wo imported $13,000,000 worth of wool manufacture*. At the decrease«! rates Used in the Springor bill —they average about 30 [¡er cent, on last year’s imports as a basis—we should have to import $115,000,(XX) worth.au in- Xrcaso of $72,000,000 over 1801, in ordor to make up tho $20,000,000 deficiency in revenue. This, remember, is what Mr. Springer himself says would take place. What effect would this increase in im ported goods havo on domestic industry? First, as to tho farmer: The$72,000,(XX) incrqpso iu manufactured wool would contain 210,000,000 pounds of raw wool, which would come in to take tho place of $72,000,000 worth of goods now made iu this country of domestic wool, and to reduce tho demand for the pnsluct of our own sheep growers by 2111 (XX),000 pounds. But this is not all. Since Mr. Springer admits that a mere decrease in duties will increase imports so enormous ly, certainly ho cunnot deny that liia ro- mot iug the whole duty from raw wool will tend to increnso imports of it also At tho very least we should import no less of foreign raw wool than was im- ]M>rted Inst year, when tho amount was 119,ooo,ood pound*, of this M,000,OK pounds were carj«et wool, which wo shouhl have to import any way, since it is not unit, as Free-traders contend, can not be successfully produced here. We consume, at n liberal estimate, 000,000,000 [¡ounds of raw wool in tho Uulted States. We can safely assiimo that tho umount would not go above that figure the first year of Mr. Springer’s policy if it should lie inaugurate«! by tho present congress. Now let us see whore the farmer would come out: Onee Only. Lost Christ ma« day tho vicar of a church in a large manufacturing town had been kept busy the whole morning Owing to the large number of weddings. He was just leaving the church wheu another couple came. The vicar was very angry, and tol«l them they were too late and would have to come another morning, but both p)eade«l ho hard to be marrie«! then that lie consented at last, saying, "I will marry you this time, but don’t let it occur again.”—Tit-Bits. Cool« Difft runce, to lai supplied by Ameri can farmers............................................ But they rnlsod hud jeur...................... im.oon.an 3rn,UM),aoo Difference, or shrinkagu in domestic dcmumi MM0MM iloru would bo 1(17,000,000 pounds of American fnnuvm* wool left on tbuir liands nfter the homo market had liewn fully snpp’ivd. What would they do with it? There is but one ntiswur. They inuat hv U it for what it would bring—low enough to un- denwll the chwipeat wool in tho worhl Thu existunco of such an enonuoua iur- pin», over half of tho whole domestic product, would send thu market bo low that fnrmont would again »laughter their flock» for tallow Never lignin would good time» return for our »beep owner» while the tree wool polk*)’ prevailed. Even when doinetitic pnxluction lutd fallen the necuHMary 107.0(H),000 pounds, the preMHire of cheap Australian, Afri can and Argentine wool upon the market would continually tend to tend piicee even lower and lower till American sheep raising was confined to thu Humi- dtwert plains of the west. There it might lie (Mirtsiblu for »vine wool to l»e grown, but our main dejiendenco must la» upon foreigu wool«. This is the inevitable logic of .Mr. Hprltiger'11 niliiiiwion, and it would bv well fur Al>i<'ric»n farmers tu tin lerrtuml what it mean* to them.
