ness to shoot, because the movements of
tho porpoise am so uncertain that one
does not have time to rniso the gun to
the shoulder before they an. out of sight
beneath the water. Tho women take as
much interest in the sport as tho men,
and quite a number are out every after­
noon perched on the lower deck of the
pier, rille in hand, and waitiug for a good
chance to shoot. Tho s[K>rt seems to lie
more in the attempt to capture big game
than in successful results, as it is quite
rare for one of the fish to be killed and

There have recently been many com­
plaints to tho postmuater concerning tho
I ohs of registered letters iu the Philudel-
phia office, and the officials have lieeu
greatly worried by tho charges that there
were thioveH in tho service. It has been
decided to erect n gallery along the roof
of the working room, from which watch­
men can look down upon theentire force
without being «een from below. This
gallery will bo eighty feet long, und will
depend from the glass and iron ceiling
by iron support«. In it there will lio
frequent «mall windows with «winging
nn«hefl, from which the watchman can
see every part of tho grout room where
tho «tamping and distributing is all done.
Here there uro ll(X) mount work ut times,
and it is itnpoasible to oversee all of
them from any other point than above.
The watch is to bo kept not alone for
the purpose of watching for thefts, bnt
also to see that men do not shirk their
work or disturb other clerks by con ver-
tuition. Tho gallery will l>o reached by
an iron stairway at it« southern end, and
at it« northern end another iron stair­
way will aacend to the glass roof. There
are two of tho«e roofs, ono above tho
other, anil It is necessary for Workmen
to ascend to tho lower ono to clean it of
dust. There is now no w«y to reach
there except by putting up n ¡adder. It
i« ««id thnt it is purely for this purpose
that tho gallery goes up, but there i i an­
other use. There has been talk of having
such 11 structure for nearly two years.
Assistant Custodian George Painter has
been agitating the matter, and luis finally
succeeded iu getting tho work done.—
