Results of Senior Spelling Bee in
Vernonia last week
Rainier resident Bruce Lee
placed first in the Vernonia Se-
nior Spelling Bee, held last
week at the Vernonia Senior
Center.
Beulah Blades, a Portland
resident and member of the
Scappoose Senior Center,
placed second.
Melba Atwood of Cornelius
took third place by winning the
spell-off needed to break a tie
with Mary Lee, a Scappoose
resident and mother of Bruce
Lee.
Fewer people participated
than in previous local senior
spelling bees, but all partici-
pants expressed enthusiasm
for the event. They also had the
opportunity to meet Kim Wor-
rall of Rainier, who took first
place in this year’s Oregon Se-
nior Spelling Bee.
Worrall is also the newest
member of the OSSB Board of
Directors, which sponsored the
local event. Four Vernonians –
Audeen Wagner, Tobie Finzel,
Carol Sawyer and Noni Ander-
sen – have placed first at the
state competition and are also
on the OSSB board.
The 2013 Oregon Senior
Spelling Bee will be held in
April at St. Mary’s Heritage
Center in Lake Oswego. For
more information, call Audeen
Wagner, 503-429-9700.
P.E.O. wreaths will once again be
at Vernonia Christmas Bazaar
It is time, once again, to plan
for the annual Vernonia Christ-
mas Bazaar, and everyone is
looking forward to its new loca-
tion: the Commons area at the
new Vernonia School. The
dates this year are December 8
and 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. on Saturday, and 11:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
P.E.O. will be selling wreaths
on a pre-order basis, and are
taking orders now. The price
will stay the same as last year,
$18.00 for a 20-inch wreath.
Please call Mary at 503-429-
4814 or 503-429-7214 to place
your order. The wreaths may
be picked up at the bazaar, or
earlier by prior arrangement.
P.E.O. will also have a craft
table with hand-made items
and delectable goodies for
sale.

Senior Center News
When was the last time you checked to see if
there were any changes or additions in our
state’s driving laws? If you’re like most of us, it
was a long time ago. Perhaps it’s time to catch
up on the latest.
“55 Alive”, a six hour refresher driving course
for adults, will be presented in two parts on No-
vember 26 and 27, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the
Vernonia Senior Center. The cost is $12 for
those 55 and older, $14 for those under 55, and
free for veterans and their spouses. In addition
to being a good idea, taking this course may
also be a money saver, since many insurance
companies give a discount to senior citizens
who complete the AARP-sponsored course.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner –
and Christmas coming up way too soon – you
may be looking for some special cookware or
serving dishes. Before you spend an arm and a
leg on new goods, check out the Vernonia Se-
nior Center Thrift Shop. There are a surprising
number of delightful choices at affordable prices,
and you may find just what you want. Even bet-
ter, everything is half-price during the first week
of every month! The thrift shop is open Monday
through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The center will be closed on Thanksgiving
and the following day, November 22-23, so the
floors can receive their annual sprucing up. The
doors will open Monday for the normal schedule.
The annual Christmas Bazaar at the senior
center will be held Saturday and Sunday, De-
cember 8-9. Rental space is available at just $10
per table. Be sure to reserve your space early!
Call 503-429-3912 for more information.
Lunch is served Monday through Friday at
noon. A $4.00 donation is suggested for those
60 and older, and $5.00 for those under 60. If
you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you can
call ahead and place your order. Breakfast for all
ages is available for $3.50/person on Fridays
from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Maple bars are made
fresh daily for $1.00 each! If you want maple
bars for a gathering of any kind, call 503-429-
3912 a day or two ahead and place your order.
Enjoy great live entertainment every Wednes-
day at the center, with live music. Come in early,
stay for lunch and enjoy fine midday entertain-
ment along with a good meal.
Free blood pressure checks are available on
the 4th Wednesday of each month from 11 a.m.
to noon. Foot Care is scheduled on the second
and fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per
person. Call Marilyn Albro, R.N., for an appoint-
ment, at 503-429-0406.
The Five Area Lunch is suspended during No-
vember and December because of the many
holiday activities in the communities. The Janu-
ary lunch will depend on the weather, so we will
keep you informed.
