The INDEPENDENT, November 7, 2012 Results of Senior Spelling Bee in Vernonia last week Rainier resident Bruce Lee placed first in the Vernonia Se- nior Spelling Bee, held last week at the Vernonia Senior Center. Beulah Blades, a Portland resident and member of the Scappoose Senior Center, placed second. Melba Atwood of Cornelius took third place by winning the spell-off needed to break a tie with Mary Lee, a Scappoose resident and mother of Bruce Lee. Fewer people participated than in previous local senior spelling bees, but all partici- pants expressed enthusiasm for the event. They also had the opportunity to meet Kim Wor- rall of Rainier, who took first place in this year’s Oregon Se- nior Spelling Bee. Worrall is also the newest member of the OSSB Board of Directors, which sponsored the local event. Four Vernonians – Audeen Wagner, Tobie Finzel, Carol Sawyer and Noni Ander- sen – have placed first at the state competition and are also on the OSSB board. The 2013 Oregon Senior Spelling Bee will be held in April at St. Mary’s Heritage Center in Lake Oswego. For more information, call Audeen Wagner, 503-429-9700.
