Page 10 The INDEPENDENT, September 19, 2012 State candidates at PAF, September 24 Veterans Benefits and Job Fair On Monday September 24, the Washington County Public Affairs Forum (PAF) will wel- come the candidates for Sen- ate Districts 17 and 18, the De- mocratic incumbents Elizabeth Steiner Haywood and Ginny Burdick, and their Republican challengers John Verbeek and Suzanne Gallager. Also at the podium will be Tom Cox, Liber- tarian candidate for State Trea- surer. The PAF meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Old Spaghetti Factory, 18925 NW Tanasbourne Drive. The doors open at 10:30, with a first lunch serving at 11:30 and a second at noon. The program begins at noon. The lunches are open to the public; lunch is $15, $10 for soup and salad, and $6 for iced tea or coffee only. Members pay $2 less for each option. Eric Belt, Veteran Services Program Supervisor for Wash- ington County, says, “High un- employment rates put veterans at risk of becoming homeless more quickly than veterans of any other era.” The Depart- ment of Veterans Affairs esti- mates that Iraq and Afghan- istan veterans who become homeless do so in three years, compared with 13 years for Vietnam-era veterans.
