The INDEPENDENT, July 5, 2012 P.E.O. announces 2012 scholarships Three recent Vernonia High School graduates received scholarships from Philanthrop- ic Educational Organization (P.E.O.). Two scholarships were awarded by the Vernonia chapter to Seniors Alyssa Log- gins and Kelly Smith. The Ida Loyd Walrod memorial scholar- ship, which is given to a gradu- ating senior in a county-wide competition, was won this year by Natalie Wallace. In addition, during the past few months, P.E.O. scholar- ships were awarded to Tonya Clark and Souvanny Miller. These grants were awarded by P.E.O foundations in our state, to support them in their ongo- ing studies. P.E.O. is proud of the “suc- cess stories” that occur by virtue of the hard work and de- termination of the recipients. Marissa Clement recently re- ceived a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Portland, graduating in Life Sci- ence with a Minor in Psycholo- gy. She was a P.E.O. scholar- ship recipient four years ago. Kelly Martinez has recently graduated with a BS in Educa- tion, and has been working in Vernonia, substituting at the el- ementary school in many classroom situations. Martinez is one of those “returning” stu- dents, having received a de- gree from Pacific a decade or so ago. Her present degree was attained mostly online – she did her practice teaching here in Vernonia. At present, she is continuing her studies, working toward a master’s de- gree in Education. Her long- term goal is to teach at the mid- dle school level in Special Edu- cation. The local P.E.O. chapter is a small part of a huge interna- tional philanthropic organiza- tion, sharing a goal to help women meet their educational needs. This includes support for high school graduates, as well as for women who return to college to further their edu- cation. Locally, this effort is supported by various fund-rais- ing events, the largest of which is the annual Christmas Bazaar, where all those fra- grant wreaths that are sold at the bazaar contribute to P.E.O’s educational fund.
