Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, July 5, 2012 Chalk Talk Chalk Talk is a column of information about Ver- nonia schools. This column was provided by Su- perintendent Dr. Ken Cox. I want to give a huge Thank You to everyone who had anything to do with the Last Chance Dance. The event, which was sponsored by the Vernonia Education Foundation, was chaired by Vernonia School Board Member Bill Langmaid. Bill was able to organize it with help from Janean Shaw Zavales, Lisa Edgar, Sheril McWhirter, Ronda Lennen, Mark Brown, and many other students, staff and community mem- bers. The night of the event even more commu- nity members showed up to ensure that the evening was a success. The dinner was deli- cious and the following auction raised a signifi- cant part of the more than $10,000 that was raised that evening. We of course would not have been able to raise that much if it had not been for the many who contributed auction items and those who at- tended the event. I was introduced to several Vernonia alumni and enjoyed some of the many old time photos that were available to view. Mrs. Lynn Shaw’s fifth grade class has creat- ed a small school his- tory book that is fantastic and there are still copies available. In fact we still have wooden folding chairs available for sale. Please contact the district office if you are interested. Finally, I am once again asking for your help in our move from the existing schools to the new campus. Next Tuesday, July 10th, we will be meeting in the covered play area to coordinate how we can make this happen. We are limiting the volunteer help to those 12 years old and above and everyone will need to sign an insur- ance waiver (or have their parents sign one). I also want to point out that community members will not be allowed in the new building. Please contact the district office (503-429-5891) if you are planning on volunteering since we will need to have a count for lunch, which will be provid- ed. We look forward to seeing you on the 10th! Sign up now for British Soccer camp Vernonia is gearing up for its second British Soccer camp, run by Challenger Sports, for children age 3 to 12. It will be held July 16-20 at the high school football field (to be en- closed by fencing for safety during construction work), from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. There will be full and half day options for children age six and older. Their will be high-level soc- cer coaching from British coaches, with individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, games and scrim- mages. The teaching includes respect, responsibility, integrity, sportsmanship and leadership. Last year’s camp was deemed a big success. Soccer signups will be held July 12 and 19 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Vernonia Li- brary. Castrophony was brought to the shelter because her owner lost her home and wasn't able to keep her. According to the owner Castrophony is a very loving and sweet girl that gets along well with other cats. However, we have found that Castrophony doesn't really like other cats and therefore we recommend that she be the only cat in the household.
