Vernonia council has three open positions for November election Three Vernonia city council positions will be on the ballot of the November 6, 2012, general election. The open positions include the mayor’s seat, a two year term for 2013-14, currently held by Josette Mitchell, and two four-year council member seats, currently held by Randy Parrow and Kim Tierney. Election packets are avail- able from the City Recorder at Vernonia city hall, 1001 Bridge St. Nominating petitions must be filed no later than August 23, 2012 by 4:00 p.m. All are invited to Community BBQ There will be a Community BBQ, open to everyone in the Vernonia community, on June 24, starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Vernonia Community Church, on the corner of State Ave. and A. St. In addition to free BBQ, there will be games and a movie night. All are welcome to attend. UNWC meeting date announced The Upper Nehalem Water- shed Council Steering Commit- tee meeting will be held June 28, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Fishhawk Lake meeting hall. Men’s Golf Club back in Vernonia The Vernonia Men’s Club has returned to the Vernonia Golf Club. Men, young or old, are encouraged to come join the club and enjoy some golf. The Men’s Club meets on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. On May 30, the sunshine brought out some of the “Old Guys” (60 to 86 year-olds), who hadn’t seen each other in years. OGA handicaps are available and allow the not-so- good golfers to compete with the better golfers. The Pioneer Baptist Fellow- ship has been meeting in one of the Vernonia school build- ings each Sunday, but with the school demolition coming, the church will be relocating for the summer. Starting on June 24, at 6:00 p.m., Pastor John Cahill will hold services at the Ver- nonia Foursquare Church at 850 Madison Ave. When the new school opens, it is anticipated that the church will hold services there. More information will be provid- ed as the end of summer nears. Your blood pressure is important, so take advantage of the chance to get a free blood pressure check on the fourth Wednes- day, June 27, from 11 a.m. to noon. Remember, poker has been added to the center’s activities. It’s chips only, and the first deal is right after lunch on Thursdays. There are other games, including pinochle, on Fridays after lunch. You can also bring along your suggestions for other activities. Needleworkers get together every Tuesday to enjoy conversa- tion while they work on large and small projects. Remember, you don’t have to wait until an activity is sched- uled, come on in any time and see what’s going on, it’s your sen- ior center. Lunch is served Monday through Friday at noon. A $4.00 do- nation is suggested for those 60 and older, and $5.00 for those under 60. If you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you can call ahead and place your order. If you enjoy Bingo, you can have fun while you eat lunch, with free Bingo each Monday starting at 11:45 a.m. A little ice cream for dessert is good, too, and Wauna Federal Credit Union makes that possible on the last Wednesday of each month, and the June birthday lunch will be on Friday, June 29. This month’s Five Area Lunch will be in Scappoose on Monday, June 25. Visiting the other senior centers in Columbia County is always fun, so come in and sign up to join us. Foot Care is scheduled on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per person. Call Marilyn Albro, R.N., for an appointment, at 503-429-0406. The Senior Center Thrift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Always half price during the first week of each month. Wheelchairs are available and unused canes are needed; call Pauline Coffman at 503-429-3912 for more information. Connie’s great breakfasts are available Fridays at the Senior Center, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Breakfast for all ages is just $3.50 per person. Maple bars are made fresh daily for $1.00 each! If you want maple bars for a gathering of any kind, call 503-429-3912 a day or two ahead and place your order.
