The INDEPENDENT, June 6, 2012 Page 5 Obituary GRACE “MARY” BRAL Grace “Mary” Bral, 82, North Plains, died May 1, 2012. A fu- neral mass was held May 17 at St. Edward Catholic Church in North Plains, followed by burial at the St. Edwards Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Bral was born March 1, 1930, in Roy, to George and Mary (Vandervelden) Vande- hey. She was raised on the family farm in Roy. She gradu- ated from Banks High School in 1948, then attended Marylhurst College for one year. She worked at Iron Fireman making gyros for the department of de- fense. In 1953, she married John T. Bral. They made their home in North Plains. She enjoyed her flower gar- den and vegetable garden. In the winter she would oil paint, quilt, sew and cook. She was preceded in death by her husband and five sib- lings, Francis James, Larry, Neil, Lyle, and Jim Vandehey. Survivors include six chil- dren, Peter Bral, David Bral, and Ann King, all of North Plains, Fr. Steven Bral of Italy, Alan Bral of Aloha, and Sr. Ste- fana Bral of Monaco; two broth- ers, Omar Vandehey of Banks, and Earl Vandehey of Forest Grove; and 11 grandchildren. Remembrances are sug- gested to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School, St. Edward Catholic Church, or to KBVM Radio. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ALFREADA M. CUTRIGHT Alfreada “Freada” Martha Cutright, 94, Banks, died May 26, 2012. A funeral mass was held June 2 at St. Francis Catholic Church, followed by vault interment at St. Francis Catholic Church. A complete obituary will be published when available. JOHN MONROE KITCHEN John Monroe Kitchen, 67, Buxton, died May 11, 2012. Pri- vate cremation rites were held at the Hoyt Crematory in Forest Grove. Mr. Monroe was born April 22, 1945, in Gentry, Arkansas, to Charlie and Launita (Hobbs) Kitchen. He was raised in An- derson, California, where he graduated from high school in 1963. He served in the U.S. Air Force. In 1966, he married Sandra Pierce. They made their home in Buxton, starting in 1978. He worked as a truckdriver for In- terstate Trucking Company for 20 years, retiring in 2010. He enjoyed caring for his dog, Ziggerman. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael, and a sister, Judy Kitchen. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Benjamin of Port- land, and Christian of Buxton; three daughters, Sunni Brasseur of Cornelius, Stephanie Kitchen of Beaver- ton, and Samantha Kitchen of Buxton; four siblings, Carletta Houtman of Redding, Calif., James Kitchen, and Tawnia Shumaker, both of Anderson, Calif., and Shawn Barr of Ari- zona; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. Tualatin Valley Funeral Al- ternatives of Hillsboro was in charge of arrangements. HARRELL “HAL” J. LOOPER Harrell “Hal” Jones Looper, 88, Forest Grove, died May 20, 2012. Graveside services, with full military honors, were held May 25 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Looper was born No- vember 18, 1923, in Magazine, Arkansas, to James Aaron and Mary (Jones ) Looper. He was raised and educated in Mans- field, Ark. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1946, he married Helen J. Jurhiewiez. They made their home in California before mov- ing to Eddyville in 1963, then Toledo, before moving to Ft. Smith, Ark. In 2003, they moved to Forest Grove. He had been a construction superin- tendent for OSU, then later owned and operated Hal’s Electric Company in Toledo. He was also an Electric Appren- ticeship Instructor. He enjoyed flying and ama- teur radio. Harrell “Hal” Looper Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wayne Looper of Banks, and Ken Looper of New Brighton, Minnesota; one daughter, Karen Kay of Forest Grove; six grandchildren, in- cluding Michael Kay of Vernon- ia; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove was in charge of arrangements. CLAIR “BILL” W. MCPEAK Jr., 83, Banks, died May 23, 2012. A memorial mass was held May 30 at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial, with military honors, was held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. McPeak was born Sep- tember 16, 1928, in Banks, to Clair W. and Hulda (Jahola) McPeak, Sr. He graduated from Banks High School and later attended a secondary school for two years to learn electronics. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Kore- an War. In 1957, he married Madelyn Wilson. They made their home in Palatine, Illinois, then Phoenix, Ill., and Beaver Dam, Wisconsin before moving to Green Lake, Wis., in 1963. In 1975, they moved to Banks. He was a printing press repairman, and worked for Tektronix for 15 years, retiring at age 62. He had also worked in the family business, McPeak Trucking, and had operated C&M Mo- lasses in the late 1970s. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, golfing, the outdoors, and dancing. He will be re- membered for his storytelling. He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters, Wilma Vermiere and Molly Bai- ley. Survivors include two daughters, Cathy McPeak of Aloha, and Laurie Jones of Fairview; five siblings, Earl Mc- Peak of Palm Desert, Califor- nia, James McPeak of Suther- lin, Karen Trine of Beaverton, Carol McPeak of Salem, and Mary Gager of Milford, Kansas; and two grandchildren. OVIATT Susanna “Sue” Mary Oviatt, 64, Vernonia, died May 27, 2012. A memorial mass was held June 1 at Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort. Mrs. Oviatt was born June 2, 1947, in Hillsboro, to Howard “Dutch” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Vanderzanden) Vandehey. She was raised on the family farm in Forest Grove, and grad- uated from Banks High School in 1965. In 1966, she married Fred Oviatt. They made their home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, while her husband was in the Army. They moved to Beaver- ton in 1967, then to Hillsboro before moving to Vernonia in 1970. She worked at Tektronix, then retired from Intel. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and reading.
