Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, May 16, 2012 VHS Forestry Team takes 4th place at Camp 18 logging exhibition The Vernonia High School Forestry Team was one of six high school teams competing at the third annual Camp 18 Logging Exhibition, on May 12. The other teams included two from Knappa, two from Sweet- home, and one from Scio. Competition was a relay starting with the axe toss, and moving on to power bucking, cross-cut sawing, choker set- ting, and high climbing. The Vernonia team, in its first com- petition, was helped with the loan of high climber Dylan Sut- ton, from one of the Knappa teams. Knappa also loaned the VHS team a cross-cut saw to use in the competition. The skies were sunny and the attendance good and, when the sawdust settled, the Vernonia team finished in fourth place. Prior to the start of competi- tion, ten new memorials were dedicated at the Loggers Memorial. The memorial is looking for volunteers to open the memorial and greet the public.
