64 customers brought 4800 lbs. of hazardous waste, 4300
lbs. of paint, and 300 lbs. of batteries, etc. (“universal
wastes”) to the Household Hazardous Waste collection
event, put on by Columbia County on April 21.
Mothers’ Day will be Sunday, May 13, but the
Vernonia Senior Center will have a special din-
ner on Wednesday, May 9 at noon, to honor
those special ladies called “Mom”. Each mother
will receive a boutonniere, and there will be
drawings for prizes. Don’t miss this special day.
The center’s annual Plant & Garden Sale will
be held on Friday and Saturday, June 1-2. This
is a major fund raiser to help provide the many
services available for our senior citizens, and for
the community, as well. Please look over your
collection of plants, bulbs, yard art, etc. that you
would like to donate. Call Jack Harvey at 503-
429-4080 if you can volunteer your time for the
plant sale, or to arrange for pick up of your do-
nations.

4th of July fireworks donations needed
With the recent relocation of
Tom Ramsey to Hermiston, the
fate of our traditional 4th of July
fireworks show looked ques-
tionable.
While we miss Tom’s pres-
ence here, and are thankful for
his many years of service in
our community, we are happy
to announce that he left us with
another licensed and fully qual-
ified replacement for the fire-
works show. Lt. Loren Loomis,
of the Vernonia Rural Fire Pro-
tection District, has stepped
forward and volunteered to
take over responsibility for the
show.
Tom also raised all the mon-
ey to fund the fireworks show.
It costs approximately $5,000
to put on a display of the same

caliber we have enjoyed for the
last few years. This is not a
sponsored event and the city
does not set aside funds for
this activity – the money has
come from individual donations
by businesses, residents and
organizations in our area.
In order to have a fireworks
show again this 4th of July, the
materials need to be pur-
chased by the first of June.
This leaves only a small win-
dow of time to raise the funds
necessary. Please consider
making a donation and talk to
your friends, civic group, or or-
ganization to see if they would
half price. Take advantage of this monthly oppor-
tunity because you won’t find better prices any-
where else.
You don’t have to be a member to enjoy com-
panionship and good food at the center. Dinner
is served Monday through Friday at noon, with a
$4.00 donation suggested for those 60 and old-
er, and $5.00 for those under 60. If you prefer
your meal to go, call ahead and place your order.
Meals to go are $5.00.
Breakfast is available every Friday from 7:30
to 9:00 a.m., at $3.50 per person regardless of
age. Maple bars made fresh daily are $1.00
each. If you want maple bars for a gathering of
any kind, call 503-429-3912 a day or two ahead
and place your order.
Foot Care is scheduled on the second and
fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per person.
Call Marilyn Albro, R.N., for an appointment, at
503-429-0406.
Every Friday after lunch is game time. Relax
with others while you sharpen your poker or
pinochle skills. You can also bring along your
suggestions for other Friday activities. A little
bird whispered that Scrabble players are want-
ed; if you’re interested, put your name on the list.
