Respectfully, Frank E. Hupp, DTM Columbia City Alleges excessive pay for CRPUD head To the Editor: I have it on good authority that the Columbia River PUD’s top executive down in the Deer Island office is making in ex- cess of $170,000 per year. This doesn’t include retirement, va- cation pay, a generous car al- lowance or any of the other customary perks typical of cor- porate America. But wait, stop! This isn’t corporate, private America. This is a public utility asking for, and usually deserv- ing of, the public’s trust. This is more then a little troubling. I believe the job is worth roughly a third of that fig- ure; maybe a little more, but not much. Here’s why. A teacher’s job, a policeman’s job; a parole officer’s job; these all have more stress than this position. Allow me to continue. Buying energy from Bon- neville at a preferred rate is a no brainer and PUDs qualify. Private market power buys are done at the best possible price based on use projections. Any- one with good communication skills, a head for numbers and a willingness to walk humbly and give others credit could do it. Now the PUD is on the hook long term for his retirement based on this level of compen- sation. How and why do volun- teer boards continue to do things like this? This is Columbia County, not Malibu. A person can live like a king on a third of that amount. Drop the scale of pay down to a reasonable level and use the savings to refigure the rate per kilowatt hour for ratepay- ers.
