Domestic crude oil production rose 3.6 percent last year to an average 5.7 million barrels a day, the highest since 2003, according to the Energy Department. Natural gas output climbed to 22.4 trillion cubic feet in 2010 from 20.2 trillion in 2007, when the Federal Energy Reg- ulatory Commission warned of the need for more imports. Natur- al gas prices have fallen more than 80 percent since 2008. This isn’t all the result of the Obama administration’s policies, but his policies have increased both the speed of these changes, and the areas that are now open for exploration. Claims by Republican presidential candidates (or Republi- cans in Congress) that Obama refuses to open up more federal lands to exploration, and is keeping us “dependent” on middle eastern oil, have no basis in facts. They aren’t stupid and they know better.
