JULIE ANNE KUNIS-SMITH Julie “Pippi” Anne Kunis- Smith, 50, North Plains, died December 24, 2011. A memori- al mass was held December 28 at St. Edward Catholic Church in North Plains. Mrs. Kunis-Smith was born January 31, 1961, in Portland, to John and Imogene (Ed- wards) Kunis. She was raised in North Plains. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1979. In 1992, she married Vernon “Butch” Smith. They made their home in North Plains. Though first and foremost a mother, she had worked as a cook at the North Plains Senior Center and, most recently, as a ma- chinist for Riley Machine in North Plains. She enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, camping, fishing (espe- cially in the fall), singing in the church choir and visiting the beach, particularly Rockaway Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her hus- band; one son, John Cuyler of Cornelius; two daughters, Mary Jane Cuyler of Sydney, Aus- tralia, and Rebecca Cuyler of North Plains; three brothers, Tony Kunis of Manning, Thom Kunis of Portland, and Keeter Kunis of Hillsboro; one sister, Jonni Culligan of Portland; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Remembrances are sug- gested to a charity of choice. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. VERA H. MATTILA Vera H. Mattila, 91, Long- view, Washington, died De- cember 17, 2011. A funeral service was held December 22 at Steele Chapel in Longview with Pastor Don Wantland offi- ciating. Interment was at Longview Memorial Park. Mrs. Mattila was born April 17, 1920, at Oak Point in Cowlitz County, to Royal and Lena Hunter. She graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1937. In 1952, she married Raino “Ray” A. Mattila. They made their home in Longview, in the house Ray built for them. She was a bookkeeper. She enjoyed bowling, gar- dening, knitting, playing crib- bage, taking her grandchildren to the beach and on nature walks, fishing, camping, and being a Cub Scout leader. She will be remembered for her qui- et nature and positive attitude. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include one son, Marc Mattila of Longview; two daughters, Pam Weller of Ver- nonia, and Diane Tollefson of Medford; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Remembrances are sug- gested to Community Home Health & Hospice in Longview. LEVI CHRISTIAN MCKINNIS Levi Christian McKinnis, 36, Redland, died December 15, 2011. A memorial service will be held January 7, at 5:00 p.m., at the Redland Grange. Mr. McKinnis was born May 10, 1975, in Portland, to Arnold and Lynne (Strubb) McKinnis. He was raised in Redland and attended Gladstone High School. He worked as a logger. He enjoyed working in the woods alongside his father, hunting, fishing, traveling, camping, and gatherings with friends. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include two chil- dren, Lacy and Brandon of Mo- lalla; a step-daughter, Tirzah of Molalla; his father of Buxton; one sister, Shannon McKinnis of Forest Grove; aunts; uncles; one niece; and one nephew. James Essel Williams Sr., 94, Banks, died December 13, 2011. Services have been held. Mr. Williams was born De- cember 27, 1916, in Mountain Grove, Mississippi, to John Mil- ton and Anna Belle (Upshaw) Williams. He was raised in Mountain Grove. In 1941, he married Opal L. Andrews. He worked for Epler Dairy Farms. After moving to Oregon, he worked for the Beaverton School District. He was involved with the Oregon Trail Wagon Train for 16 years. He enjoyed leather- work, woodcraft, playing horse- shoes, volleyball and softball. Survivors include four sons, James Jr., David, Samuel and Daniel; a daughter, Donna S. Hundley; three sisters, Della A. Dooms, Jesse M. Miller, and Faye Swibes; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Remembrances are sug- gested to Grace Fellowship in Banks.
