ROBERT F. “BOB” HENDRIX ing from Field Kindley High School in 1962. He earned an Associate Degree in Social Sci- ence from American River Ju- nior College in Sacramento, California. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years. In 1976, he married Frances Phipps. They made their home in Portland before moving to Vernonia in 2004. He worked at the Raytheon Company for 10 years, then retired in 2005 from Northwest Bag House. He enjoyed photography, showing dogs, rally racing, hunting, fishing, the outdoors and crossword puzzles. He was proud to have 15 years of sobriety. He was preceded in death by his father; and a stepson, Shawn Phipps. Survivors include his wife; a son, Kelly of Vernonia; his mother of Coffeyville, Kan.; two brothers, Jim and Bruce, both of Coffeyville, Kan.; three sis- ters, Pat Alexander, Janet Thomas, and Connie Jaggers, all of Coffeyville, Kan.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. MCDANIEL Robert F. “Bob” Hendrix, 67, Vernonia, died November 11, 2011. A celebration of life serv- ice will be held Saturday, No- vember 19, at 3:00 p.m., at Ne- halem Valley Bible Church with Pastor Gary Taylor officiating Mr. Hendrix was born July 26, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, to Ralph and Hazel (Bishop) Hendrix. He was raised in Coffeyville, graduat- Sally Maureen McDaniel, 77, Banks, died November 3, 2011. A celebration of life for family and friends will be planned for a later date. Mrs. McDaniel was born Au- gust 13, 1934, to Alvin and Lil- lian (Jett) Woodard. She was raised in Carthage, Missouri. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1952. She worked for Tektronix for over 19 years as a Facilities Manager, retiring in 1995. 24 years ago, she married Clifford McDaniel. An accomplished horse- woman, she won many ribbons and trophies showing Ten- nessee Walking Horses in the 1960s and 1970s. She enjoyed trips to the beach, playing cards, growing her own vegeta- bles and flowers, and talking with friends. She was preceded in death by two siblings, Bob Woodard and Edith Brand. Survivors include her hus- band; three sons, Dan Nixon of Auburn, Washington, David Nixon of Sumner, Wash., and Tom Nixon of Carthage, Miss.; one daughter, Leslie Rathbun of Seattle, Wash.; three step- sons, James Kane, Jr. of Port- land, Tom McDaniel of Merlin, and Randy McDaniel of Sayuli- ta, Mexico; two step-daughters, Kathy Morales of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Patti McDaniel of Harbor City, California; one brother, Dan Woodard of Tuc- son, Arizona; eight grandchil- dren and four great-grandchil- dren. DAGNY IRENE MELSTAD Dagny Irene Melstad, 80, Banks, died November 6, 2011 of cancer. A celebration of life service will be held November 19, at 11:00 a.m., at the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in For- est Grove. Mrs. Melstad was born Au- gust 3, 1931, in Arlington, South Dakota, to Clifford and Alvina Miller. Banks High School in 1970, then received a Bachelor’s De- gree in Arts from Oregon State University in 1974. Dagny Irene Melstad In 1950, she married Burton Melstad. They moved to Bay City in 1954, then to Banks in 1974. She was primarily a homemaker, but since moving to Banks, had been the Star Satellite Improvement District secretary, managing the water operation. She enjoyed making quilts for family and for Lutheran World Relief and Medical Teams International. She also enjoyed reading, hiking, travel- ing, yard and garden work. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Jennie and Mar- ion. Survivors include her hus- band; one son, Michael Mel- stad of Banks; two daughters, Peggy Martin of Hermiston, and Julie Boatner of Keizer; four brothers, Glenn Miller, Gordon Miller, and Harvey Miller, all of Arlington, S. Dak., and Howard Miller of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Lorna of Seattle, Wash.; seven grand- children and seven great- grandchildren. Remembrances are sug- gested to Mt. DONNA MARIE MEYER Donna Marie Meyer, 57, Beaverton, died November 5, 2011. A Funeral Mass was cel- ebrated November 11, at Visi- tation Catholic Church. Inter- ment took place at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Roy. Mrs. Meyer was born De- cember 19, 1953, in Hillsboro, to Edward and Rose (Bernards) Jansen. She was raised on the family farm in Verboort. She graduated from Donna Marie Meyer In 1987, she married Lawrence “Larry” Meyer. They made their home in Beaverton. She worked in banking, starting out as a teller and working up to Training Officer at US Bank by the time she retired in 2000. She enjoyed cats and hors- es, baking, crocheting, reading and country music. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Ron Jansen. Survivors include her hus- band, one brother, one sister, nieces and nephews. Remembrances are sug- gested to The Salvation Army West Women’s & Children’s Shelter in Portland. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. ROBERT EDWIN SCHLEGEL Robert Edwin Schlegel, 89, Forest Grove, died October 25, 2011. A service will be held No- vember 23, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in For- est Grove. Mr. Schlegel was born June 30, 1922, in Hillsboro, to Edwin Samuel and Lura Anne (Williams) Schlegel. He was raised in Banks, graduating from Banks High School in 1940. He attended Pacific Uni- versity for one year, then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1945, he married Dorothy J. Modrow. They made their home in Salem for a year, then moved to the Schlegel Farm east of Banks. He and his fa- ther built a home using lumber milled from their own tim- ber.
