to better manage surface water
that all too often finds its way
into the wastewater lagoons.
The City will begin to address
this by completing an Inflow
and Infiltration Assessment (I &
I) in the next six months if we
can secure resources for this
project. As is clear throughout
Vernonia, during major rain
events this additional surge of
water can consume the capac-
ity of sewer pipes, resulting in
home backups and overflows
into creeks and surface streets.
An I & I will identify where the
problems exist throughout our
community.

1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup strong coffee
whipped cream (optional)
In a saucepan, combine milk, pumpkin and sugar. Cook over
medium heat, stirring constantly until liquid is steaming. Remove
from heat and add vanilla and cinnamon. Whisk until thoroughly
combined.
Pour pumpkin mixture into a large mug and add coffee. Top
with whipped cream, if desired, and add a light sprinkling of cin-
namon or nutmeg. Makes one tall latté.

THOMAS ARMITAGE JONES
KEVIN JAMES MACDONALD
FRANK LEE STEELE SR.
Thomas Armitage Jones,
75, Madras, died October 14,
2011, from complications of
Parkinson’s Disease. A memo-
rial will be held at the family
farm at a later date. Mr. Jones’
ashes will be spread at sea
near his favorite beach in Maui,
Hawaii.
Mr. Jones was born Febru-
ary 11, 1936, to Thomas Evans
and Elizabeth Sandra (Kinn-
ear) Jones. He was raised on
Maui, then attended Wasatch
Academy in Utah. He served in
the U.S. Military in France. He
earned a Bachelors Degree in
Teaching at Pacific University.
He married Glenda Agnes
Brown. They purchased a fam-
ily farm in Buxton, where they
raised strawberries and ani-
mals. They both taught school
in the Banks School District. He
also operated a radiator repair
and auto body shop. With his
father, he owned and operated
several gas stations in the
area. He also owned and oper-
ated commercial fishing boats.
He enjoyed rebuilding en-
gines and cars, and enjoyed
fishing for salmon.
Survivors include his wife;
one daughter, Elizabeth Logan
of Buxton; one sister, Elizabeth
Wiltrout of Fresno, California;
Kevin James MacDonald,
51, Vernonia, died October 21,
2011. A celebration of life was
held October 26, at the Vernon-
ia Scout Cabin.
Mr. MacDonald was born
June 9, 1960, to James and
Mary Ann MacDonald in Devils
Lake, North Dakota. He was
educated in N. Dak.
In 1992, he married Patsy
Croy. They made their home in
Portland before moving to Be-
midji, Minnesota. They later
moved to Vernonia. He worked
in construction.
He was preceded in death
by his wife and his father.
Survivors include his moth-
er; a stepson, David Books of
Phoenix, Arizona; four broth-
ers, Kent, and Danny, both of
Tualatin, Mike of Port Orchard,
Washington, and Larry of Can-
do, N. Dak.; three sisters, Mary
Jo Stockdill of Garrison, N.
Dak., Melissa Moser of Devils
Lake, N. Dak., and Jamie Mac-
Donald of Cando, N. Dak.;
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces
and nephews.
Robert “Bob” Leon Richards
Jr., 65, Hillsboro, died October
16, 2011. A funeral service was
held October 24 at the Firlawn
Memorial Gardens Chapel, fol-
lowed by committal.
Mr. Richards was born No-
vember 12, 1945, in Aloha, to
Robert L. and Pearl (Smyser)
Richards, Sr. He was raised in
Aloha, and graduated from
Beaverton High School in
1963.
In 1965, he married Linda
Lonero. They made their home
in Portland before moving to
Hillsboro in 1967. He was a
plumber. He worked for Sunset
Valley Plumbing and retired
from Power Plumbing in 2004.
He enjoyed guns, dancing
and hunting in his youth, and
enjoyed the outdoors. His pas-
sion was using his hands to
build things, including rebuild-
ing hotrod cars and woodwork-
ing.
He was preceded in death
by his parents.
Survivors include his wife;
one son, Robert “Rob” Rich-
Frank Lee Steele Sr., 79, St.
Helens, died October 20, 2011.
Services were held October 25
at Skyline Memorial Gardens in
Portland.
Mr. Steele was born April 9,
1932, in Dow, Oklahoma, to
John and Mary (Boniedot)
Steele. The family moved to
Vernonia in 1935. He attended
school in Vernonia. In 1948, he
went to work for the Oregon-
American Mill. He worked there
until the mill closed, then
worked at Forstex-Stimson
Lumber Company for 35 years.
In 1953, he married Joyce
Mollohan. They made their
home in Vernonia until moving
to Hillsboro in 1989. In 1994,
they moved to St. Helens.
He enjoyed fishing ad hunte-
ing, especially with his life-long
best friend, Harvey Gore. He
also enjoyed home improve-
ment projects in his retirement.
He was preceded in death
by two brothers, Claude and
Clarence; and two grandchil-
dren.
Survivors include his wife;
two sons, Mike of Clatskanie,
and Frank Jr. of Florida; three
daughters, Patricia Lynch of St.
Helens, Karen Kjelland of
Clatskanie, and Pam Lucero of
Hillsboro; one brother, John R.
of Yamhill; one sister, Betty
Bailey of Portland; 12 grand-
children, five great-grandchil-
dren, nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank everyone for
the love and kindnesses you have
shown to our family. It has made the
journey easier.
