The INDEPENDENT, September 7, 2011 Page 21 Obituary RANDY B. BATEMAN Randy B. Bateman, 58, Cor- nelius, died August 13, 2011. A service was held August 27 at Henry Hagg Lake in Gaston. Mr. Bateman was born Octo- ber 11, 1952, in Hillsboro, to Vernon and Estelle (Cook) Bateman. He was raised and educated in Banks, Vernonia and Forest Grove, graduating from high school in 1970. In 1981, he married Debbie L. Thomas. They made their home in Forest Grove before their divorce. He worked as a laborer in residential construc- tion until his retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and camping. Survivors include a daugh- ter, Jamie L. Moler of Gaston; a stepson, Shawn Parker of Alo- ha, a stepdaughter, Rochelle Stevens of Forest Grove; a sis- ter, Vicki Jorgenson of Salem; two grandsons; a niece and a nephew. MARK ANDREW DAWSON Mark Andrew Dawson, 57, Columbia City, died September 1, 2011. A celebration of life will be announced in the summer of 2012. Mr. Dawson had many friends in the Upper Nehalem Valley. WILLIAM “BILL” HARKSON He was raised in Timber. He moved to Vernonia in his early twenties. He worked for West Oregon Electric Co-op for sev- eral years, then for independ- ent loggers before logging on his own and running his own small sawmill. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and new experiences. He was known as a gentle, loving man. He is survived by his wife, Sue; six children, Bill, Stuart, Jane, Rich, Reesa, and Tim; 10 grandchildren; and one cousin. Remembrances are sug- gested to the Parkinson Foun- dation. WILMA LEE HARRINGTON Wilma Lee Harrington, 83, Newberg, died August 29, 2011. A graveside service was held September 2 at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Mrs. Harrington was born June 7, 1928, in Bixby, Okla- homa, to Charles and Sarah (Hobbs) Turner. When she was young, the family moved to Joseph/Enterprise. Five years later they moved to Scoggins Valley, then to Forest Grove where she completed school. She played bass guitar for Eddie Marshall and The Out- laws for several years. She enjoyed traveling, garage sales, and her dog, “Baby Jezebel”. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles “Chuck” Stallings; and a brother, Charles “Buddy” Turner. Survivors include two daughters, Franci Miles of Ore- gon City, and Darcy Snodgrass of Newberg; two brothers, Don Turner of Beaverton, and John Turner of Banks; two sisters, Marie Kujela of Palm Springs, California, and Edna McGlone of Portland; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. TERRY KIEFER Terry Kiefer, 57, Banks, died August 18, 2011. A funeral mass was held August 24 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Mr. Kiefer was born April 10, 1954, in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, to William P. and Betty (Lahaie) Kiefer. He was raised in Rath- drum, Idaho, and graduated from Lakeland High School in 1972. He earned an associate degree from North Idaho Col- lege in 1974, then a bachelor’s degree from Pacific University in 1978, and a master’s degree in 1986. In 1984, he married Mary Zubek. They made their home in Forest Grove before moving to Hillsboro in 1988. In 2000, they moved to Banks. He worked his entire career as a teacher at Banks School Dis- trict. He taught physical educa- tion and coached basketball, baseball, football and track. He retired in 2011, after 33 years in the district. He enjoyed traveling, skiing, biking, golfing, swing dancing, and sports. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his wife; five children, Katelynn of Beaverton, Nichole of Spo- kane, Washington, Christo- pher, Elizabeth, and Joseph; his father of Rathdrum, Idaho; two brothers, Mark and Bret; two sisters, Doreen Edwards and Jeri Lynn McDevitt; one granddaughter, nieces and nephews. FLOYD VERNARD RYE Floyd Vernard Rye, 90,m Forest Grove, died August 21, 2011. A funeral mass was held August 27 at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy, fol- lowed by vault interment at the Union Point Cemetery in Banks. Mr. Rye was born December 14, 1920, in Manning, to Lulu Del (Mills) and Andrew Rye. He was raised in Manning and graduated from Banks High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1962. In 1942, he married Helen Corrine Dolan. They made their home where he was stationed. When he left the Army, they moved to Cedar Mills. In 2009, he moved to Forest Grove. He worked as a fork-lift operator for Holman Transfer. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, wood cutting, carpentry, and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Gayle Corrine Rye. Survivors include his son, Richard Rye of Banks; two grandchildren; and six great- grandchildren. BEATRICE “BEA” SULLIVAN Beatrice “Bea” Sullivan, 92, Vernonia, died August 17, 2011. A remembrance of life was held August 19 at the Ver- nonia Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Larry Gib- son officiating. Bea Sullivan Mrs. Sullivan was born Feb- ruary 25, 1919, in Paris, Ten- nessee, to Virgil and Vassie Moore. She was raised in Ken- tucky and Tenn. In 1937, she married Ernest Sullivan. They lived in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Ten- nessee and Arkansas before moving to Vernonia in 1981. She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, JC Walker; three sisters, Clemmie French, Carnell Tucker, and Lindell Gatewood; Survivors include four sons, Paul Sullivan of McAlister, Ok- lahoma, Ronald “Ron” Sullivan of Yucaipa, California, Edwin “Wynn” of West Palm, Florida, Roger Sullivan of Nolensville, Tenn.; one daughter, Loretta Seibert of Vernonia; two sis- ters, Jessie Nicholson, and Mary Hooper, both of Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grand- children; three great-great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
