2011 Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Page 3 There are many Jamboree events scheduled for your enjoyment Nehalem River Rendezvous Every year, the Nehalem River Rendezvous Black Pow- der Encampment includes a large Trader’s Row, children’s games, shooting and throwing events that are fun for both par- ticipants and spectators. There will be archery, rifle and pistol trail, and novelty shoots. The annual rendezvous sponsored by the Vernonia Muzzleloaders is held on Stoney Point Road, two miles north of Vernonia. The rendezvous is open to the public, with events sched- uled from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Satur- day, and from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Admission is free. Take Hwy. 47 North from Vernonia, ap- proximately 1-1/2 miles, turn left at Stoney Point Road and follow the signs to the parking area. Cruisin’ 2011 Car Show Jamboree Cruisin’ 2011 will take place on Saturday, August 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 4;00 p.m., filling the Vernonia school grounds. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Award presentations begin at 3:00 p.m. This 20th annual car show is sponsored by Nehalem Valley Speed & Beauty Car Club. Cat- egories include Convertible, Pre-‘30, each decade from 1930 to 2000-newer, 2 wheel drive pick-up, 4X4, Special In- terest, and Rat Rod. The fee to enter a vehicle is $15.00 and includes a packet with a dash plaque and raffle tickets. Tee shirts and food will be available for sale, and there will be music by DJ all day. Pro- ceeds help support local chari- ties. Cruisin’ 2011 is free to spec- tators. Softball Games Competition in the annual Vernonia Jamboree Invitational Softball Tournament will take place every day during Jam- boree, at the Vernonia High School Fields. The eight men’s teams will start play Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and Sun- day at 8:00 a.m. The eight women’s teams will start play on Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Music There will be a variety of concerts in Shay Park during Jamboree on Saturday, August 6: • At 1:30 p.m. enjoy the sounds of the Basin Billies, • At 3:00 p.m., Broken Glory will be on hand to entertain, • At 5:00 p.m., during the final music offering, Mikal Brucken will provide some tunes to enjoy. All music is free. Food, food, food As always, there will be lots of food available during Jam- boree. There will be vendors just off Bridge St., on Adams Avenue next to Shay Park, and then there are the Jamboree staples: Open Daily 11 a.m. Biker Friendly Open until midnight Sun-Thu & until 2:30 a.m. Fri, Sat. 733 Bridge St., Vernonia 503-429-9999 JOIN US IN THE BEER GARDEN DURING JAMBOREE Jamboree Live Music August 5 th and 6 th • The famous Lions Club barbecued beef sandwiches served on Bridge Street across from Shay Park, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. • Pancake Feed at the Se- nior Center, 446 Bridge St., on Saturday and Sunday, from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., $7 for adults, $4 for children under 6. Proceeds benefit Vernonia Se- nior Center and Vernonia Cares Food Bank. • The Vernonia Booster Club will be selling hamburgers at Cruisin’ 2011 on Saturday, Au- gust 6. Horse Gaming Show The Vernonia Ridge Riders will hold a Playday, a horse gaming show and great family event, on Sunday, August 7, with competition starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Anderson Park Arena. Show events include Texas Barrel, Pole Bending, Flag Race, and Obstacle Course. Participants may compete in one of five age categories; nine years and under, 10-14 years, 15-20 years, 21-45 years, or 46 years and older. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Contestants must wear heeled shoes or boots and hel- mets are recommended. Stud horses will not be allowed to participate and no dogs are al- lowed in the arena. Kids’ Fishing Derby The Izaak Walton League Kids’ Fishing Derby is one of the first events to kick off Jam- boree weekend, on Friday af- ternoon, August 5, at Vernonia Lake. Registration is from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., with competition from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. There is no entry fee. Children compete in a num- ber of categories, including the most fish and the biggest fish. There will be prizes in each of the following age groups; chil- dren five years and under, six through nine years, and 10-14 years. Crappie, blue gill and perch are the only fish eligible for this competition. Participants are expected to supply their own bait and tackle. Children five years and under may be assisted by an adult in baiting their hooks and/or removing fish from the hooks, but the children must catch their own fish. There are popsicles for all of the kids afterwards. Library Book Sale The Friends of the Vernonia Public Library will hold a two day book sale, at the Library on Weed Ave., on Friday, August 5, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with the last hour being a $1.00 bag sale. The book selection will in- clude both used paperbacks and hard covers, all at below bargain prices. Logging Show Logging show competitors will be tested on their accuracy, speed, and agility in a variety of contests during the Jamboree Logging Show on Sunday, Au- gust 7, starting at noon in Hawkins Park. Most of the par- ticipants are professional log- gers. Events include axe throw, 4-5 ci. and 5-6 ci. working saws, unlimited saws, women’s bucking, pole falling, steeple chase, pole walk and snip, and choker setting. The Vernonia show is one of only two Columbia County log- ging competitions. There will be trophies at the conclusion of each event.
