Page 16 The INDEPENDENT, June 16, 2011 Racing is underway for the 2011 season at River City Speedway From page 14 was third, followed by St. He- lens drivers Travis Tolman and Tim Oyler. “It was awesome for us to take the top-three spots,” said Beehler, 31, who took third in the 2010 series standings be- hind runnerup Joel and defend- ing champion Adam. “It felt good to get the win, especially since I lost a couple of races last year to Adam that were similar to this race. It was a lit- tle frustrating to have only a 15 lap main event though.” Vancouver’s Chris West led the first five laps of the sports- man main with his Tom’s Auto & Performance Machine Chevy Malibu. Nusom passed West on the inside of turn two and stayed ahead the remainder of the 15-lap race to get the win in his Bud’s Auto Wrecking/ Steven’s Printing Chevy Monte Carlo. “I had fun, but I’m not going to race here full time,” said Nu- som, 48, the 2007 sportsman champion. “Every driver always wants to win and that’s why I come out here to compete. I just try to stay calm and relaxed and not worry too much about where I finish, but sometimes that’s hard to do.” Nusom won by five car lengths over West. Clark Ten- ney of Scappoose was third, followed by Rainier’s Sean Fox and Dan Smith of Scappoose. It marked the 21st A main win combined in street stock and sportsman events for Nusom in the last four years. “I had a great time and third place is pretty good way to start,” said Tenney, a double duty driver who also took sixth in the modified main with his 21st Century Towing/David’s Automotive race car. “I’m a conservative driver and the co- driver on our team, Clyde White, is a good driver, too. I think we’ll be able to get top- five finishes every week and by doing that, I think that we’ll have a good chance to win the sportsman championship.” Gee, a second-year driver who was runnerup last year to defending champion Kathy Mc- Mullen, led from start-to-finish to win the women's main with her Skinny’s Texaco Buick Re- gal. McMullen of Deer Island, was second, followed by Jenae Frelich of St. Helens, Lindsay Paulson of Portland and 16- year-old Morgan Tenney of Scappoose.
