Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, June 16, 2011 Hayes shelter reducing adoption prices Fundraisers planned for Kiefer The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams with cats, kittens, dogs and even older puppies. To help animals find good homes, the shelter is reducing adoption rates through June 18 for adult cats and dogs and for kittens. “We’re having adoption spe- cials on dogs and cats – we’re hoping some great people will take this opportunity to find the pets of their dreams,” says Deborah Wood, manager of Animal Services for Washing- ton County. Adoption Special Prices (Good through June 18): • Adult Cats (over one year old): $10 • Kittens (under a year): $80 for the first kitten/$40 for the second one • Adult Dogs (over a year): $100 • Puppies (under a year): $150 Every animal is spayed or neutered before adoption. They are micro-chipped and up-to- date on all shots. Dogs come with a one-year Washington County license, and cats have been tested negative for the cat diseases of FIV and Feline Leukemia. “These animals have about $300 to $400 worth of services put into them. Adopting at these rates is an incredible bar- gain,” says Wood. Because the shelter has so many animals right now, the se- lection of great pets is especial- ly large. “Do you like big dogs? How about small ones? Long- haired cats? Short-haired sleek ones? Kittens? We have some- thing for every animal lover,” says Wood. To see adoptable pets go to www.washingtoncountypets.co m or go to 1901 SE 24th Av- enue in Hillsboro (just off Tu- alatin Valley Highway, right next to Lowe’s and Home De- pot). Adoption hours are Mon- days, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from Noon to 5:30 p.m. Closed on Sundays. Terry Kiefer, a Banks Ele- mentary School teacher, has been diagnosed with cancer and the community is helping to raise money for the family. There will be a ‘50s Swing Dance at Banks Elementary tonight from 7:00 to 10 p.m. to benefit Mr. Kiefer. A Hagg Lake Walk/Run will be held June 18, starting at 8:00 a.m. for walkers, and 9:30 a.m. for runners. Both 5k and 10k will be available. Registra- tion is $35 ($20 for students and those 55 and over). This event is sponsored by Angels Making A Difference (angels- makingadifference.com). Additional ways to donate are on the website and the Facebook page, Angels Mak- ing a Difference. Amateur radio operators sought There are about 2500 li- censed amateur radio opera- tors in Washington County and the Emergency Managers know about 125 who are active and would volunteer to help in an emergency. When the earth- quake/storm/flood happens, these folks become the lifeline that will provide emergency communications for local gov- ernments, schools, hospitals, fire districts, water districts, and communities. More volunteers are needed and you can help. The friendly and helpful Wash- ington County Amateur Radio Emergency Service organiza- tion meets in Aloha each month. Please visit http://www.
