The INDEPENDENT, June 2, 2011 Pioneers annual meeting date set The 88th annual meeting of the Nehalem Valley Pioneer Association is scheduled for Sunday, June 12, at Jewell High School in Jewell, Oregon. Nehalem Valley Pioneer As- sociation was founded in 1924 by pioneers who settled the Nehalem Valley, and has been carried forward by their de- scendents. All past, present and future residents of the area are welcome, as is everyone interested in local history. This year’s gathering in- cludes the introduction of the association’s school outreach program. The coming school year will see seniors at the val- ley’s two high schools involved in a local history project spon- sored by the association. The homestead map will also be re- turning this year – plan to at- tend and make your family’s mark on local history. Doors will open at 10 a.m. and the business meeting starts at 11 a.m. A potluck pic- nic is at noon, served buffet style in the school cafeteria (bring dishes that are ready to eat). The afternoon program begins after lunch, around 1:00 p.m., followed by more time for visiting and viewing the associ- ation’s scrapbooks. Get a haircut for Loggers Museum On June 5, the “Fall Your Hair” fundraiser, put on by Han- nah Brown, will donate all pro- ceeds raised to the Camp 18 Loggers Museum and Memori- al. Brown, a licensed barber, decided to hold the fundraiser after going to the Camp 18 Loggers Museum and Memori- al to see the plaque put up by Vernonia’s V&S Log Express to honor Brown’s father, Bill Brown of Gaston, who died last October. Bill Brown was a well known logger around Banks and North Plains. After seeing the memorial, Hannah Brown wanted to do something that would serve her father and oth- er area loggers. Brown hopes the fundraiser will help those in logging take pride in being part of the timber industry. The $15 haircuts will take place at 21st Ave Hair Studio, 1918 21st Ave., Forest Grove, from noon to closing and all the money goes to the museum. For more information, call 503- 351-1300. Help CCWRC by adopting a bed The Columbia County Women’s Resource Center manages a 22-bed shelter to help women and families find safety while fleeing domestic and sexual violence. It costs $7.00 per night for CCWRC to maintain each bed and offer these essential services, and there is a continuous need for funds to cover these costs.. In an effort to raise funds (and awareness) to support the shelter, the Columbia County Women’s Resource Center will begin their Adopt-A-Bed fund- raiser in June. Any person wishing to donate may “pur- chase” a bed at Norma’s Place starting June 1. Norma’s Place is a resale store located at 164 Little St., St. Helens. A bed may be purchased for any number of nights, starting at $7.00 for one night. Pillows are also available for $1 each. Once purchased, the beds and pillows will be put on display to reflect the name of the donor and the number of nights pur- chased. Additionally, donors will be recognized for their pur- chase on the CCWRC website and Facebook page.
