Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, May 5, 2011 Between the Bookends By Susan Cackler, Library Assistant Banks Public Library The annual Book, Plant and Art Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Banks Public Li- brary is this Friday, May 6 from 3-7:00 p.m., and Saturday, May 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Plants for sale will include native plants, perennials, veg- etable starts and flowers. Books for sale will include do- nated items and items withdrawn from the library, as well as magazines and media. This sale has some- thing for everyone, and you are sure to find a gift for Mom. Burnt Ends Barbecue will also be offering pulled pork sandwiches for sale, so come by Schlegel Hall in Banks Sunset Park, have lunch and browse the offer- ings. Sign-ups for summer reading are just around the corner! Watch for information about how to sign up coming late this month. Signups will start June 1. There will be programs available for everyone from lap readers to adults. Join us for craft night Wednesday, May 11 from 6- 9:00 p.m. in the community room. Enjoy some lively conversation while you work on your favorite craft. Come and meet some new friends or visit with old ones while using the library’s work space and enjoying some light snacks. You may find knitters, scrapbook- ers, quilters and maybe even a tatter or two. If you would like to be on an e-mail reminder list for craft night, call the library with your name and e-mail. Do you have a youngster who needs something to do on Wednesday morning? Story time at the library could be the answer to what to do. Our reader, Miss Cathy, picks a few stories around a theme each week and shares these stories with the children in an enter- taining, engaging way. Join us for Preschool Story Time on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. in the community room of the library. Story Time is designed for children aged three to six, but younger siblings are welcome. The themes for May are: May 4: My Mom May 11: Let’s Take a Ride May 18: Bug-a-Boo May 25: One Year Older The Friends of the Banks Public Library can always use your support. You can make a tax deductible do- nation, become a member, or volunteer. Money that the Friends raise helps the library purchase Cultural Passes, upgrade equipment and purchase books and movies. Also, we take donations of books that are in good condition. On the shelf: Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with a Pearl Earring, writes another intriguing story of historical fiction. Mary Anning is born to a poor and uneducated family, but she learns on the fossil- strewn beaches of the English coast that she has a unique gift: the “eye” to spot fossils no one else can see. Elizabeth Philpot, a mid- dle-class spinster and fossil hunter, becomes Mary An- ning’s unlikely champion and friend and together they make some of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century. The trou- ble starts when Audrey Faye comes looking for stylists for the Miss Magnolia Blossom pageant. Grace jumps at the opportunity but finds a theater full of protestors, angry mothers and frantic contestants. Then protes- tors storm the stage and Audrey Faye is found dead, murdered with a nail file. Soon, the beauticians are hard at work trying to solve the mystery and clear themselves of any suspicion. The Burning Jacket by Nel Rand. This is the story of 11-year-old Raynie who lives in Anaheim with her mother, Molly. Her best friend is a tortoise named Erma Geddon. Molly, recently divorced, owns a bakery but dreams of being a full-time artist. Granny Tooley, Mol- ly’s mother, is a squatter, living on forest land in the Oregon Coast Range — off the grid and far removed from society. These three characters struggle with per- sonal challenges including homelessness, cancer and ethnic intolerance, set against a backdrop of the changing modern world.
