The INDEPENDENT, April 7, 2011 Vernonia Grange offers activity update The Vernonia Grange will hold a one day rummage sale on Saturday, April 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Grange Hall, 375 North Street. All proceeds will go to the Grange for building improve- ments. If you have items to do- nate, please bring them to the Grange between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15. Bingo Nights at the Grange will be offered on Saturday, April 9, and Saturday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. Come on out for a night of fun, food and friend- ship. Youth under 18 may play if accompanied by a parent. Does your organization or church need a regular meeting place? The Vernonia Grange is seeking additional tenants to keep this charming old building actively occupied. Short term rental rates are $10 per hour; longer term rental rates are ne- gotiable. With high ceilings, wood floor, seating for 75 or more, new folding tables, limit- ed kitchen facilities, and a stage, the space is suitable for a variety of activities. Grange membership is required for at least one member of your group. At $35 per year, the Grange offers you membership in a 143-year-old organization that promotes community serv- ice, sustainable agriculture and healthy rural living. Child safety seat event in Clatskanie Columbia County Safe Kids, in partnership with Alliance for Community Traffic Safety (ACTS Oregon) and several community partners, will be holding a free child safety seat check up on Thursday, April 14, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The event will be held in Clatskanie at the Columbia County Rider Transit Center, 280 E. Colum- bia River Hwy. in Clatskanie. The clinic provides an op- portunity to have a child safety seat checked by a certified technician, who can correct misuse, help with installation and teach you how to correctly install the seat. Technicians can also check for seat recalls. Welcome Additions There is no cost to have a tech- nician check your child safety seats. Please plan to spend 30- 60 minutes at the event. Additionally, through a grant funded by the Oregon Depart- ment of Transportation, Colum- bia County Safe Kids is also able to provide low-cost child safety seats to families in need. Families who receive Tempo- rary Assistance to Needy Fam- ilies (TANF) should contact their worker about payment for a seat. Easter Egg Hunt set for April 23 The annual Vernonia Easter Egg Hunt is almost here! The egg hunt will be held at Hawkins Park on Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. sharp! The egg hunt is for children ages 0-10. There will be lots of eggs and goodies for the chil- dren to find. The Easter Bunny will also be present and ready for a picture with the kids. The Easter Egg Hunt is sponsored by the Vernonia Community PTA. Senior Center News Good news — free hearing checks are back on the monthly schedule. They will be performed by a representative of Columbia Hearing Aids on the third Monday of each month from 1:00-2:00 p.m. No appointment is needed. Sally Harrison is the choice to represent the Vernonia Senior Citizens Center in this summer’s My Fair Lady Pageant, to be held during the Columbia County Fair. Do you have questions or suggestions for the center? If so, re- member to attend the Board of Directors meeting on the second Friday of each month at 10 a.m. This is also a great way to find out how the center operates. A complete, delicious lunch is served Monday though Friday at noon. A $4.00 donation is suggested for those 60 and older, and $5.00 for those under 60. If you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you can call ahead and place your order. If you enjoy bingo, you can have fun while you eat lunch. Din- ers play free Bingo each Monday starting at 11:45 a.m. Breakfast for all ages is served Fridays from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at just $3.50 per person. Maple bars are made fresh daily for $1.00 each! You can also order maple bars for a gathering of any kind by calling 503-429-3912 a day or two ahead and placing your order. Needleworkers gather each Tuesday, starting about 10:30 a.m., to enjoy companionship while working on their projects. Pinochle players enjoy friendly competition each Friday, start- ing after lunch.
