The committee also expressed a desire to see polling that would indicate support for such an effort, and last fall, a scientific survey of citizens county-wide came up with the following major ideas supported by the public: 1. Law enforcement in rural areas of the coun- ty is inadequate; 2. Enhanced county law enforcement benefits both city and rural safety by deterring criminal activity outside city limits; 3. The lack of county investigational person- nel makes Columbia County a criminal target; and 4. City police officers should be able to rely on county sheriff’s deputies for assistance and backup. Armed with this information, I worked with the Board of County Commissioners to identify the best way to address the concerns of voters and provide the resources necessary to get the job done. Together, we identified a property tax rate of $0.6203 per $1,000 in assessed value.
