The INDEPENDENT, February 17, 2011 Page 21 Obituary RICHARD “MAX” BUCKNER Richard “Max” Buckner, 73, Vernonia, died February 1, 2011. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Mr. Buckner was born Febru- ary 10, 1937, in Vernonia, to Ed and Alice Buckner. He was raised in Vernonia. He left Ver- nonia High School early to join the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1955, he married Laura Brewer. They made their home in Vernonia. He was self-em- ployed in road building. He enjoyed NASCAR and gold mining. He received an award from the Bureau of Land Management for his gold mine reclamation processes. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jerry L. and Edmond, both of Vernonia; two brothers, Linn of Vernonia, and Jerry of Dallas, Georgia; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one nephew. Remembrances are suggest- ed to the Vernonia Senior Cen- ter. Springer and Son Funeral Home in Aloha was in charge of arrangements. STANLEY “SAM” H. DILLON Stanley “Sam” Howard Dillon, 54, Juneau, Alaska, died Janu- ary 30, 2011. A funeral mass was held February 4 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Burial took place at Helvetia Cemetery. Mr. Dillon was born October 17, 1956, in Portland, to Stanley H. and Willamina (Simpson) Dil- lon, Sr. He was raised in Hills- boro, graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1975. In 1975, he married Lois Bor- den. They made their home in Hillsboro and Southern Califor- nia, before divorcing in 1990. In 2000, he married Sherri Perrin. They lived in Hillsboro before moving to Alaska later in 2000. He worked in construction and fire protection. He enjoyed motorcycles, rock & roll, muscle cars and spending time in the outdoors while fishing and camping. He was preceded in death by his mother. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jennifer Zemp of Cornelius and Julia Renden of Kansas City, Kansas; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Lois Losli of Vernonia; his father of Hillsboro; two brothers, Ray- mond and George; two sisters, Marie Wakehouse and Theresa Salee; and six grandchildren. Remembrances are suggest- ed to NW Autism Foundation. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrange- ments. JASON LOZIER GILLISPIE Jason Lozier Gillispie, 32. Forest Grove, died February 7, 2011. A celebration of life service was held February 12 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove. Mr. Gillispie was born Sep- tember 19, 1978, in Hillsboro, to Russell Gillispie and Patricia L. Lozier Holmes. He was raised in Banks until moving to Forest Grove when he was 15 years old. He worked in sales for a telemarketing/call center. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping and bowling. Survivors include his parents, John and Patricia “Trish” Holmes of Forest Grove; a brother, Christopher Benjamin “Ben” Gillispie of Cornelius; a step- brother, John Andrew Holmes of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a step-sister, Tracey Jean Holmes of Chicago, Illinois; his grand- mother, Marian Lozier of LaPine; aunts; uncles; and cousins. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove was in charge of arrangements. Junior Jake Guinn, 84, Bux- ton, died February 9, 2011. A service was held February 16 at the Buxton Cemetery. Mr. Guinn was born October 1, 1926, in Okemah, Oklahoma, to Jake and Helen (Alexander) Guinn. He was raised in Okla. He served in the U.S. Army dur- ing World War II. In 1947, he married Lois C. Skaggs. They made their home in Okemah before moving to El Mirage, Arizona in 1950, then to Buxton in 1958. He worked as a strawberry farmer, then worked for the Hazelnut Growers Associ- ation until he retired. He enjoyed church, fishing, camping, and boating. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leta Mosely and Neoma McKeever. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry and Kenneth, both of Gaston, and Cameron of Buxton; two daughters, Patricia McCarthy of Buxton, and Tammy Johnson of Beaverton; two brothers, Ted of Checotah, Okla., and Floyd of Buxton; three sisters, Pairlee Mosely of Spring- dale, Arkansas; Freda Swartz of Live Oak, California, and Brenda Ruby of Carlton; 11 grandchil- dren; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrange- ments. JACK SHERRIN HOWARD JUNIOR JAKE GUINN Jack Sherrin Howard, 70, Beaverton, died February 6, 2011. At his request, there will be no services. Private interment was held at the Vernonia Memo- rial Cemetery. Mr. Howard was born March 24, 1940, in Santa Maria, Cali- fornia, to Joel and Stella M. (Wayne) Howard. In 1940, the family moved to St. Helens, then a few years later to Vernonia. He graduated from Vernonia High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army. In 1963, he married Katherine Abbott. They made their home in Portland and later divorced. He married twice more with both marriages ending in divorce. He became a welder and welded until he retired. He was preceded in death by a brother, William “Bill; and a sis- ter, Joyce Christensen. Survivors include his son, William Brian Howard of Port- land; his daughter, Kristen Howard Janosik of Pennsylva- nia; his brother, Scott of Tigard; three sisters, Barbara Glaske of Beaverton, Nancy Howard of San Diego, Calif., and Susan Miller of Portland; five grandchil- dren; nieces and nephews. BLANCHE MARIE KEMPER Blanche Marie Kemper, 83, Verboort, died February 2, 2011. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 19, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort, fol- lowed by a memorial mass and burial at Visitation Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Kemper was born April 24, 1927, in Banks, to Remi and Mary (Cop) Vuylsteke. She was raised in Banks, graduating from Banks High School in 1944. After high school, she worked as a clerk for the Hillsboro Argus. In 1946, she married Clarence “Click” Kemper. They made their home on the Kemper family farm in Verboort. She worked at the Washington Coun- ty Sheriff’s office for 23 years be- fore retiring in 1988. She enjoyed gardening, mak- ing candy and baking for the hol- idays, rummage and garage sales. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Vuyl- steke and Lawrence Vuylsteke; and a sister, Florence Riley. Survivors include her hus- band; two sons, James “Jim” Kemper of Gaston, and Donald “Don” Kemper of Hillsboro; a daughter, Michele Anonsen of Monument, Colorado; a brother, David Vuylsteke; six grandchil- dren; and eight great-grandchil- dren. MARILYN JEAN KURTZ Marilyn Jean Kurtz, 70, Hills- boro, died February 1, 2011. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in Tacoma, Washington. Mrs. Kurtz was born October 11, 1940, in Tacoma, Wash., to Frances and Ruby (Westrom) Smith. She was raised in Taco- ma, graduating from Stadium High School in 1958. In 1959, she married Edward Kurtz. They made their home in Tacoma. She moved to Hillsboro in 2009 to be closer to family. She enjoyed watching sports, playing cards, camping and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1991. Survivors include two sons, Michael Kurtz of Newberg, and Kenneth Kurtz of Federal Way, Wash.; one daughter, Sherry Reisinger of Banks; one brother, Charles Smith; three sisters, Harriet Williams, Marlys Man- gusen, and Karen Spradley; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
