I hope that you are all enjoying the New Year and that 2011 will be the best for the Vernonia Community. We are indeed experiencing some exciting times as we all eagerly await the com- pleted construction of our new schools. With a special thanks to the Vernonia Community PTA for their continued support of our teachers, thank you all for being proactive partners in your stu- dent’s education. As mentioned by Dr. Cox in the last edition of Chalk Talk, the School Board and the VSD host- ed a Town Hall meeting, February 10, which highlighted various educational programs fea- tured throughout the district. Thanks to all staff and community members who helped put on this event; including Debbie Stahlnecker, Rachel Wilcoxen, Beth Kintz, Dana Hyde, Aaron and Betsy Miller, Jan Dyer, David and Sonya Spack- man, Juliet Safier, Doran Lower, James Brookins, Teri Willard, Liz White, Paul White- man, and the VHS Leadership Class. The WGS Title I Reading Program is a now a School-Wide program that provides all children with the help they need to become proficient readers. The Positive Behavior Instruction and Support (PBIS) program helps students gain the tools they need to behave appropriately, and of- fers recognition for a job well done. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Spackman, the Homework Club, designed to offer free tutoring for students, is up and running again staffed completely with volunteers. Many staff members have been participating in the CLASS grant process. CLASS (Creative Leadership Achieves Student Success) is de- signed to provide all staff access to professional development opportunities that will empower them to take on leadership roles that will ulti- mately lead to increased student success. As part of the new school construction process, our campus, in partnership with the expertise of business and school leaders, will house a Ver- nonia Rural Sustainability Center. This flagship program has been a key component in the ac- quisition of outside funding for our schools. Addi- tionally, we will be able to offer real, hands on learning opportunities using our own natural re- sources. At the high school level we have several pro- grams (Oregon Youth Conservation Corp and Youth Transition Program) designed to offer field work experience. Concessions and the Balloon Company are staffed by Vernonia students. And finally, student career and scholarship recogni- tion are two areas that have grown significantly in the past few years. If you wish further discussion and/or informa- tion on any of these topics, feel free to contact me or any of the above staff members. Thanks again for all you do.
