Remember, if the weather is snowy or icy, be sure to call the library at 503 324-1382 before you come, to make sure we’re open. Also, most items can be renewed over the phone or via the inter- net. If you are unable to return items on time because of weather conditions, let the library know. Join us for craft night Wednesday, February 9, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the community room. Enjoy some lively conversation while you work on your favorite craft. Come and meet some new friends or visit with old ones while using the library’s work space and en- joying some light snacks. You may find knitters, scrap- bookers, quilters and maybe even a tatter or two. If you would like to be on an e-mail reminder list for craft night, call the library with your name and e-mail. Do you have a youngster who needs something to do on Wednesday morning? Story time at the library could be the answer to what to do. Our reader, Miss Cathy, picks a few stories around a theme each week and shares these stories with the children in an enter- taining, engaging way. Join us for Preschool Story Time on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. in the community room of the library. Story Time is designed for children aged three to six, but younger siblings are welcome. The themes for February are: February 2: Pork Pie February 9: Hugs and Kisses February 16: Polly Wants a Quacker February 23: The Cat’s Meow of growing edible crops, with nature doing much of the work for you. A forest garden is modeled on young nat- ural woodland, with a wide range of crops grown in dif- ferent vertical layers. Species are carefully chosen for their beneficial effects on each other, creating a healthy system that maintains its own fertility. This book will tell you what you need to know including how to plan, design, plant and maintain a forest garden. It also has a directory of over 500 plants, including trees, shrubs, annuals, root crops and climbers. The Red Garden by Alice Hoffman. Hoffman writes, as always, in exquisite prose, bringing us a glimpse of small-town America and 300 years of passion, dark se- crets, loyalty and redemption in a web of tales. Many eccentric characters come to life in these tales, includ- ing a Civil War soldier who is saved by a passionate neighbor, a poet who falls in love with a blind man, and a mysterious traveler who comes to town in the year when summer never arrives. At the center is a myste- rious garden where only red plants can grow and where the truth can be found by those who dare to look. The Friends of the Banks Public Library can always use your support. You can make a tax deductible do- nation, become a member, or volunteer. Money that the Friends raise helps the library purchase Cultural Passes, upgrade equipment and purchase books and movies. Also, we take donations of books that are in good condition. On the shelf: The Girl in the Green Raincoat by Laura Lippman.
